Things You Don't See Anymore Part 3

Yep. I had a customized van that looked similar to this one.

Cool, I'll bet there are a lot of memories and stories (that cant be told) about what went on in that van.
Note that I just added a flashback link in my original post - its a riot. Someday there might even be a retro resurgence of these monsters.
Remember the muscle cars that we all used to drive as our first cars in high school because it was all we could afford - fast forward to today and now that we've worked an entire career saved money our entire lives and retired we can't even afford to buy the same car we drove in high school (cuda, mach I, camaro SS, GTO...) what went wrong?

Ah, yes. I could write a book about my van experiences.

I even started a van club back then that had lots of fun.

I am currently involved with organizing car shows and cruises. Yesterday, I was at a car cruise that had almost 700 antique and classic vehicles and many of the old muscle cars were there.

Kids in the suburbs running around riding BMX bikes, skate boarding, building tree forts, hanging out at the local rope swing, playing tackle football. Also don't see people and friends riding 2-stroke dirt bikes everywhere like they did in the 70's and 80's, like back in the good ol day's where meeting your favorite girl in school somewhere after school and only kissing her after the first or second date, when holding hands really did mean something. Not like nowadays everyone at home on the Cel phone, PS4, X-BOX, laptop or sitting watching TV. Oh, and like nowadays two kids will go have sex at a very young age and to them it doesn't even mean anything.

My current car has the seats facing the car behind you so kids can make faces and piss them off even more than my slow driving.
Yes I drive the speed or slower. I enjoy driving and if I am in your way, I do not care, I am having fun. If you do not like it, that is why there is a steering wheel,
GO AROUND and have a good day, I am.

Actually, nowadays sounds pretty good. I do miss the dirt bikes, though.

Good point Joe. We used to play whiffle ball in the streets when I was a young kid in grade school. When we got older and made it to high school we played two hand touch football in the streets.

Remember those days - when your street football team consisted of a nerf football and 2 people on each side (quarterback and receiver on offense and a rusher and cornerback on defense). Quarterback hiked the ball to himself but couldn't run the ball until he counted out loud to 5 Mississippi and the rusher couldn't cross the line until the Mississippi count was complete. Two hand touch would inevitably evolve into two hand shove as the game went on. And the game would end with the first team to get three touchdowns or the first player to get seriously bloodied up (we played in the street using the curbs as out of bounds and light poles as end zones). Now days I suspect some homeowner would call the cops if they saw 4 high school aged guys in the street outside their house yelling, chasing each other and shoving one another to the pavement.

We played baseball at a street corner... Ready made basses!

We had one of these when I was in high school...

It was our only car and my dad wanted me to take my drivers license test on it. Thankfully one of the neighbors came to my rescue and offered to let me drive his 1968 427 Corvette for the test. Needless to say, the DMV instructor looked a little worried getting into the Corvette with me behind the wheel for the test.

I took my driver's test in early October 1972 in my dad's brand really big new 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham that looked like this green one except with a black vinyl roof.

Yes, I remember well.

What's even crazier is that we used to play that in the middle of the street. If you saw now the street that I grew up on, you wouldn't believe it would have ever been possible during my lifetime. There is not a minute in the day or night where there isn't a full stream of traffic passing through.

Anybody remember these phrases? Some of them might have just been a Brooklyn things though:
  • FREE ALL!
  • OLY OLY OXEN FREE!
  • I DECLARE WAR ON _ _ _ _ _ !
  • CHIPS ON THE BALL
  • READY OR NOT HERE I COME!
There were more but I'm blanking out :).

When we played hide and seek, anybody who was not found or tagged in was called in as "Ollie, Ollie, in come free!" around here. Then, we would start a new game with a different person who was "IT".

I remember all those plus the other game we used to play that went by a couple different names - the politically correct name was "kill the guy with the ball". Where basically the goal was to dog pile the guy with the ball before he could get rid of it. Heaven help you if he threw it to you, that made you the dog pile target.
