This can't be a real Rickenbacker!

Under 1k. Who got it?

Actually....$1200 in Australian pesos. That's more than double what I would have considered paying for a bass that may have structural problems due to the P pup install. If I had the time and money it might be worthwhile fixing it up. The cheapest Ric I can find here in Oz is well over $2000 and they generally go for over $3000.

I believe that is a real Rickenbacker 4000, not a 4001s or 4003s. The top right and bottom left knob are consistent with the layout of a 4000. A previous owner has added the P pickups at the end of the neck (possibly causing structural damage) and added an additional pair of knobs and switch.

The tuners look a lot like 'wavy' Grovers, again an original Rickenbacker part that I've never seen copied on 'fakers.

For reference, the bass probably started out a lot like this:

Rickenbacker didn't maufacture them, only installed them on their instruments. If you have a beef with exploding Grovers, call this number and have it out with them:

(216) 391-1234

Don't be a troll just because you don't like Ricks.

Your paranoia is superb. I made a factual statement about the Grovers on old 4000 series. Nowhere in that statement did I imply they were made by RIC and only the ill-informed would assume so.

Blind loyalty to a brand; gotta love it. Carry on.

That's funny! I had a set of those Rick Grovers on an EB3 that I built years ago. (I have no idea where I got them). But a few years ago the bass fell over and that machine head exploded! I managed to piece it back together, but it's not 100% right and I ended replacing the machine heads.
I had two early '70s 4001s. One of them had stable Grovers but the other was a nightmare. The E and G would explode if you tweaked them too quickly.
