I'd venture to say that at least one poster on this forum, who shall remain nameless, is (in the words of Robin Williams in "Good Morning Vietnam") more in need of a ****job than any white man in history.

Yes, there is a wealth of information here, and it is indisputable that anyone who wishes to draw on that knowledge will benefit from some indepent study. But this is a forum, not a library. There is a value to talking about a subject, even if it is a subject that has been discussed before. Discussion is not "chatter for its own sake" when it is part of the learning process.
The only flaw in your point is that this thread (among others that have gone into flame wars) was not about a newbie in search of a $500.00 bass. I've seen more civility in those threads than some in the jazz technique forum. That forum has gotten pretty ugly.
The connection I've made is that the offending posters don't post in those $500.00 bass threads. Hmmm food for thought? Maybe.
OK. I cop to the fact that I'm "mean".
But I challenge anyone to get as many posts deleted by DURRL than yer's truly's.

About 10 years ago I learned a lot of things here, but after a while a had to quit... as much as I hate to quit again in these last few months even mostly as a lurker it's been kind of rough around here...
You are totally correct, but the pro wouldn't insight like the folks here do. A true pro is someone who knows more than just the music. I've been fortunate to meet and study with real pros, who have MADE history in the music, and honestly their behavior and attitude are just as critical to their success as their playing. They are gentlemen who treat people with an interest in them and the music with gratitude.
I don't get why there is such a defense of people whose crappy attitude has trumped their contributions.
Guys, thanks. The last few posts are great in really giving some thought to forums. On a forum such as this, whether newbie with a CCB or 50-year veteran with a principal chair and exquisite carved bass, there is always going to be repetition. The moderators have done a wonderful job posting stickies, and a lot of the repetitive questions have been diplomatically referred to those stickies.
Those who have kids, those who teach, those who work with youth groups of whatever kind, know that with every new year comes a new crop of kids that have to start from scratch. They will ask the same "dumb questions" (and I definitely resemble that remark), and get on the nerves of those whose personalities approach W. C. Fields.
As far as going to see shows and concerts, I was lucky. My folks subscribed to the regional symphony, the regional theatre production company, to the regional community concert series bringing in touring talent from chamber groups to dance companies to big bands, and I've been fortunate to have been exposed to a wide variety of all performing arts. Alas, not all parents are inclined, or in a locale, or in a financial position to do this. Therefore, we must take it upon ourselves to be patient and educate the new posters, and gently remind those who have been here awhile.
It's easy to say, "Search the threads." Folks, I've been doing key word searches on everything from propriety software to the latest internet engine since 1982. No search engine is perfect, and not everyone has a grasp of the boolean concepts necessary to forumulate a good word search, even with the help of Google, Bing or whatever the latest engine is. There is nothing wrong with helping out a poster with something like, "I believe you might find this helpful: [insert thread hyperlink or reference to sticky]."
Now, the good news is that it is refreshing from the last posts that there are those who still care about this forum. We can together raise the civility of this forum if we really want to. Now that we've acknowledged the situation, let us go forth and make this a better forum together.

And it really is easy to do on this site. I've done it many times successfully and am no search expert.
Whether or not the search function works is not the issue, neither is people posting "search the threads." The issue is that this USED to be a fun community that has gone downhill. A big part of that is the member who takes pride in having the most nasty posts deleted from this site. Another issue that I see is the defense of that person's behavior, which if it were a newbie doing that it would be unacceptable and they'd be banned.
Let's remember this started as a thread someone posted to share their experience.

That is the nature of a self policing community. We don't have people who are employed by TB to go around the fact check every post. That leaves it up to the membership to police itself. Indeed though that also means that disagreement has to be polite. I may have stirred it up a bit here and there but in the spirit of 'ball busting' not mean-spiritedness.
Basically I think that if this forum isn't something you enjoy then why waste your time here?
Now the real question is the NFL playoffs. Man did the Jets pull one of the biggest upsets in recent history or what? Everyone was picking the Pats to go all the way. Things are getting interesting.

The issue to me is when someone new demands answers to questions that have been answered hundreds of times and then gets "put out" when an "old timer" suggests they might want to do a search... The source of friction, in my estimation, is that many "new timers" have an expectation of instant gratification that is both unrealistic and annoying.
The information and interactions here are vast and it takes time and motivation to sift though. Just because someone doesn't want to put some time into searching doesn't always mean the people who have answered that same question literally hundreds of times are jerks.
With regards to the OP, just filling out your profile would have been sufficient... TMI might be appropriate at this point.

Probably, but it wouldn't have addressed the larger issues I wanted to air out, and am pleased to see that they're getting a good discussion.
