You're right about that, I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and know all about ball breaking. I've even gotten a punch to the face a few times for stepping out of line with people. People who were older than me, but I still wouldn't take SOME of the crap they put me through, so I got smacked around a bit.

Before I moved from NYC in October of 2008 I had been away from the jazz scene for a while. I choose not to put up with it, I played with some jazz folks I knew and liked the company of and that was it.

Thanks. Now, everybody needs to take a deep breath and relax from this last page's episode of "storming," as it is set forth in Tuckman's theory of group dynamics, also known as, "Forming-Storming-Norming-Performing," and as recently expanded on by Gina Abudi, as some have chosen to adjourn, meaning leave the forum.

Without disagreement, progress cannot happen. What everybody needs to understand is that disagreement, and even bickering, is not the terminal aspect, it is a primary aspect necessary to sift out bad ideas from good ideas and start the process of consensus building, or "norming."

Every time a new person joins the forum and proffers their input, some re-forming occurs in the group dynamic of the forum, yes, even in cyberspace. Then a phase like this last page of this thread happens as everyone gets used to the "new guy," and/or re-examines the current dynamic between existing members. Then everybody starts settling down to business again, and eventually some really good threads get going.

The goal of being humane and civil is to process the storming phase in a manner calculated to preserve the dignity of the participants. Keep that in mind as we disagree. Otherwise, having been there, I'll start on a long, boring, epistle on the origin of the phrase, "Toe the line."

Well, I think we've all made some good progress here. iiipopes, if you as the OP would like to close this thread (under "Thread Tools"), no one will begrudge you the right and we'll all be able to pore over this thread at our leisure.

And I can host any photos anyone sends me--the "TBDB Cutest Colon Contest" is just a few clicks away...

Forming, storming, norming, performing -- great concepts and stuff you really should know if you're involved with groups.

TalkBass is different, though. We're never going to be a static group of people who have a job to do. We're a fluid virtual clubhouse -- people come and go, take it seriously or not. We're a mix of newbies and pros, bluegrass slappers and avant garde warriors, guys who fix things and guys whose only callouses *ever* came from playing bass. Mostly, though, we read and write notes to each other.

This thread went south, sideways, down the crapper, whatever, right from the start. A little bit of rudeness was the seed that brought all this unpleasantness onto us.

Never, ever under-estimate peoples' ability to be offended by something you write. If you think it's the slightest bit dodgey, I guarantee at least one person reads it wrong and gets their nose out of joint.

When it comes to offending folks, that's not limited to TalkBass newbies or old-timers. That's an equal opportunity thing. We all have to watch out for that...

Close it? No way! I'm enjoying the show!

And believe me, in my prior life, I could guarantee that in spite of my best efforts at representation, not only was there the possibility that someone might be offended by whatever I said or wrote, I could count on it. so I always have to be extra careful in posting anywhere. It comes with the territory.

And yes, even as cyber groups are fluid, the dynamics can still hold true, and why we still need moderators to focus the discourse occasionally.

Since we all have the tendency to show our asses from time to time I think we should take Jeremy up on his offer. I actually had to do a test where I swallowed a camera so somewhere there is footage of my pipes from stem to stern. I'll see if I can get hold of that. I'll post it on youtube and put it in the Recordings forum.

Truly one of the strangest threads that I've ever seen on this forum. Kind of like slowly driving by a bad accident; Horrible to watch but for some reason you just can't look away. I Think I'll pass on all the clonoscopy pics as well as any and all other sad and unfortunate medical problems.

I have taught 3 students with Asbergers syndrome in the last 10 years. They were all very challenging. Typically, their parents were fairly challenging as well. Ranging from outright denial of the condition to expecting the school system to provide services that we are just unequipped to deliver. Best of luck with all of the medical challenges Mr. Isotopes.

Hey Treyzer - thanks. You will be pleased to know that the cooperative efforts of my son's physicians and counselors, the school system's IEP process, and our proactivity as parents are all working really well together.

My $.02 -

- more info about the original poster than we needed to know, not sure where that came from.

- all internet boards morph over time, and it is common to feel that the vibe has changed, even if the vibe seems great to posters newer than yourself.

- Talkbass as whole is a great site, IMO - I play both DB and BG, many styles, and just about ANY ridiculous question gets answered here, and usually in a civil way.

- regarding pros like Paul, they've never been anything other than civil to me even though I'm nowhere near their level as a player. And it's been an education.
