Double Bass This Is Who I Am

There's definitely a different vibe to the banter we get today versus what we got almost 10 years ago now. The gang back then was smaller and appeared to have more "cohesion". I remember being a bit nervous trying to get in as a newbie and how good it felt to be more-or-less accepted. (For me that was when ED POUR-QUOI gave me a name.)

For various reasons, that gang couldn't hang for the long term. Stuff came along -- most of it to be expected, I would say -- that challenged the group to stay cozy and close. We had some spats -- some of 'em pretty major. Those are always challenging. But mostly, I think, we just grew...

Seriously, I don't know how we can expect an internet forum, open to all at no cost, dedicated to a very specific topic, to be engaging and fascinating to all posters, all the time. How many years of this does it take before we've said 95% of everything there is to say about the DB? 99%?? How long before we should expect to start repeating ourselves? Before we start boring folks who maybe have gone beyond their TalkBass best-before date?

It's an internet forum, folks. Even though it might feel at times like a club, like an association of specialists, a secret society of really cool folk, at the end of the day we write each other notes about a rather limited topic and we're always mixing the old with the new. There are things that grate on the old-timers and things that grate on the newbies. Point is, there's a structure to it that guarantees eventual boredom. Sooner or later, for everybody, I think, it's gonna run almost dry for you. Then what?

Not sure if we can fix that. Not without getting an actual club; you know, with drinks and ....er... amusements. In the meantime, watch your boredom level (practice is a good alternative) and try to remember the Golden Rule. That one works in all social settings, cyber-virtual or real.

Personally, I've just been spending a lot more time doing stuff other than TalkBass. I'm glad as hell it's still here, but now it's more an every-few-days type of thing rather than an every-few-minutes type of thing.

Speaking as a moderator (my previous screed was as a plain old TB guy): posts are only deleted when there is a clear violation of TB policy. It's not always easy to make the determination if something is in violoation, but that criterion is both necessary and sufficient to get a post axed. Fact is, though, mods probably won't notice the offending post until somebody complains about it. That's where the interaction between complaint and deletion comes in. Because there are more mods on the Slab Side, it could very well be them what does the deleting.

If a post is in violation, it's just like Chris says: it's just another busted jar of sauerkraut on aisle 9, stinking up the joint. Best to get rid of it.

Michaeln, what's up with that? Feeling like the bassasylum here.

It appears, Eric, that everyone except you and I have become blind.
Dislike for an individul is one thing, but hatred and venom is another story. I think I remember some posts of mine that were actually informative and helpful. (even to some newer bassists). I had no idea that I was hated.
Nice job of moderation, Damon. Thanks.
Check michaelin's new Profile. He's taken mine. (wants to be me except for my "small equipment").
I am posting this to keep a public record of all this BS should it all, somehow, go poof.
A very sick, all time TB low.
The PM's are buzzing away; I can hear 'em out here in public.

What you're saying about michaelin's actions is pretty bad and I don't condone that type of behavior. He also deleted his posts to this thread, which is pretty cowardly IMHO. I don't think you are hated, I don't hate you, it's just the tone you've taken as of late is not helpful or appreciated. The "grumpy old guy" thing only goes so far, then it just comes off as bitterness.

I don't know, man. It's pretty creepy that the guy copied his picture, signature and changed his profile to spite Paul. That's well beyond civil discourse.

Not everybody, you cranky old bastard! ;)

Just for the record, I'd rather be marooned on a desert island with the OLDGUY than with a half a dozen of these Johnny-come-lately "instant experts".

Go get 'em Paul! :D

Where's the sense of humor in this. Michael, this is way out of control. Paul is an equal opportunity grouchy guy but not a hater. Half the time he's just messin' with everybody. His post about blood clots was so outrageous it was hilarious. Come on. You lived in N.Y.C. for quite awhile. You went C.C.N.Y. You know jazz guys like to **** with their friends heads. Especially those they like. My post about "me and the pedigree", which was deleted by the mods was only saying that. Man. This has gone too far.

Yeah, but there was a vibe among some cats that I didn't want to have any part of. It doesn't come across as fun after a while.

Yeah I know. But it comes with the territory. When I was coming up in the 70s you had to be able to hang. Nothing personal. iiipopes is more than able to handle this stuff. Also by the way as was mentioned before, his technical postings are great. And Don. No one quoted you in the last hour. Sorry bub.

EDIT- Don, I stand corrected. Regarding your colonoscopy. The forum at large is requesting digital images of your colon.

The Internet is a big place, as we know, and some of this is bordering on some legal issues.
My initial post was simply alluding to the OP's sharing about his blood clot problem and his pride in doing some stuff for Lawrence Welk, who is commonly giggled upon much like Kenny G is all over the world, IMO.
I found it all funny....that's all; it simply happened to tickle my funny-bone at that period in time. The blood-clot thing, of course, could be a serious health issue, but the choice of words in combination with the Welk statements made me laugh. This is in NO way an apology from me to ANYBODY involved in this thread.
Don Higdon seems to have an issue with a post that's been deleted. (and no, he and I haven't been Buddying up in PM's which isn't uncommin on TB).
My initial post was deleted which makes all my other posts be taken OUT OF CONTEXT and possibly misunderstood, thus the legality issue.
My sense is that, in the case of some other threads that I've been involved in here of late, this thread will end up being closed by TB Moderation. This will be my final post here before that happens.
