The problem is that Orville and Epiphone Elitist (MIJ) series rival the prices of used Gibbys on the bass market. Greco isn't that far behind. While the QC is excellent, they have a different playing feel from Gibsons which may or may not work to one's preference. So for one and only Gibson experience you might be better off with the real thing.
This is coming from a guy who loves his Orville EB-3. The only reason I may decide to part with it someday is its baseball bat neck which is nothing like any Gibson I've ever played, and I've played a lot of them.
If one is into old Gibson basses, they are still beyond inexpensive compared to everything else from the same era.
