This kid is a prodigy!

Oh, and I know a bassist who gives me tips on how to play who has not even been playing for a year. She can play a lot of Flea's stuff. Watch a guatrist playing a solo, break up and play it on the bass just by watching, she's like 21 but I'd sya thats pretty impressive. BUT, her bass isnt as big as mine and I can still stretch 5 frets!:D

Slappity Crappity!!!!!!! Whats the big deal with being able to slap 16th notes for an hour straight. What a bunch of horse bananas. Knowing theory and being able to apply that theory is what separates musicians from "rock stars".

oh, i know i shouldn't say this [i'm a drummer, after all], but... flea isn't all THAT, is he??

i love the chili peppers, but it pains me that so many people say they are such masters of their instruments. chad smith also gets a lot of talk-up as being this fabulous funk drummer, and not for nothing [note my reference to dave holland? heh-heh], the guy is basically a great groover and not much else. you wanna funk out, give dave garibaldi a call.

i'm sure this prodigy has ability, but there are a lot of 'tricks' musicians can do to make it seem like they're more happening than they really are. hopefully, this kid has a teacher who can set him straight, lest he start believing he's invincible.

of course, this doesn't mean i'm not happy for the kid. but don't delude yourself into believing that he's got it going on and you don't. just practice hard, take lessons, learn from other, better players, and listen to lots of music. running wild fills up and down the neck and being slap-happy isn't always the thing that gets the gig.

I listened to a guy in a music store recently and he played the "standards" (;))... Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Jaco. Slapping, tapping, etc. The thing that really struck me was that he didn't play anything else but these guys' stuff, note for note.

Learning this stuff is cool... now take it somewhere:D

That is pretty much kind of like I learned bass.
I listen to a lot of music and it is an influence, but I have never tried to figure out some one else’s bass line. I will learn the signature parts but that is about it. This style of learning has its downfalls but it has a lot of up sides, the first one that comes to mind is no one has ever said to me "Wow you sound just like ______"
