Those 'interesting' basses you've always craved?

Wal has always been at the top of my "bucket list" for basses to own since I found out that's what Mick Karn was playing on the last couple of Japan albums back 30 years ago. I've seen one exactly once - when I saw Mick playing with David Torn and Terry Bozzio back in the mid 1990s. Holy cow, that was playing - by all three - of an order one will seldom here in this world!

If I won the lottery, ordering a special Wal would be one of the first five things I would do. Right after ordering my dream Alembic.

99 times out of 100 I'll play an interesting bass, realize it's nothing special and walk away getting the gas out of my system. On a few other occassions, I just wound up buying it. : ) I thought I'd love the Jag but once I played it, it did nothing for me. Same with the Big Al -- 37 different variations of the same sound. Eh. Yet I always regarded a Hofner as a toy, but after having it in my hands for a while, I HAD to have one.

I've always loved the look of T-Bird/Explorer style basses. Here's the Cataldo JAEbird - "Fenderbird" replica:

I probably wouldn't get one (their ergonomics don't work for me), but they sure are cool lookin'.

I've kinda always had an attraction to 'different/interesting' basses.

At the top of my gas list at the moment, the ovation magnum. Not sure if I'll ever get one, cause I would want one that is active, bi-output, and the first body style. I've yet to find one like that.

Thanks

You're stirring up memories. I sold Ovation Magnum basses when I worked retail in the late 1970's. The unique body shape is quite comfortable, both sitting and standing. I preferred the Magnum I (passive) over the Magnum II (active) - the active electronics with 3-band EQ left me cold. One thing I remember is that the large neck pickup had gaps in its response - the signal fades if you bend strings.

:hmm:

I just bought one of them.....I finally have a red T40 to replace the one I sold (like an idiot) in the mid 80's

The next one I have craved is a 4003 in Jetglo.

After that there is really nothing, a few things GAS has got me looking at, and a bass or two I want to build that no one makes the way I want it....but nothing else I crave.

I've always found the Hofner violin basses interesting, be it the top of the line model or the Icon. Every once in a while I'll play one and think it would be cool to have one.

Haven't bought one yet.

I often pine for a Hamer 12... I'd have to be in F U money though... I just can't justify buying one "just cause it'd be cool" yet. But not just any Hamer 12, I want either the Acoustic look B12

or one like Jeff Ament's duo tone-ish style double cutaway.

I cant explain it, there is no excuse for it, but I really want a BC Rich Ironbird. Preferably in Ultraviolet, but hot pink or florescent green would do, or that snake skin BC Rich used to do. No, wait, SPARKLE! Aw heck, any gaudy finish will do. And if it had a reverse headstock and a whammy bar (for me when on an Ironbird its not a "tremolo system" but a whammy bar!), oh, the silly pointy joy of it! :D
