Thoughts On NBD Negativity

I rarely do not click on a NBD thread.

Serial negativity is an unfortunate internet trend regardless of the platform or subject.
It makes one wonder if these people didn't get enough attention growing up.

Yup. The internet in general has become toxic. Some places are worse than others, but it's getting to the point where someone could post that they like flowers and they'd get 50 negative replies. I do like the ignore button tho.

I don't bother to post NBD posts for just this reason. The celebrations are "meh" at best. I am happy enough when I have something I like but I don't have a pressing need to get attention over it, and this community fails to deliver there, anyway, so it's totally OK.

Yeah it would be great for new players if others would share in their joy, but honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. It's like posting a new song to YouTube. Literally nobody cares.

That’s fair, but some of us enjoy celebrating others good fortune and happiness! I doubt anyone is really losing sleep over some strangers negativity anyhow. Those of us on the positive side push through that stuff on a daily basis. Soft overcomes hard!

I placed an order with Sweetwater today for a fairly inexpensive bass. The only threads that I plan to post a NBD in is the Yamaha BB club and the praise and worship thread. I feel no need to subject myself to cork sniffers.

Recently, I regrettably took part in a short back and forth on a NBD thread. Continuing to argue in that thread felt like adding to the problem instead of addressing it, so I figured I’d continue my old-man-ranting-at-cloud diatribe here.


Obviously, not everyone agrees on everything, and that’s great! I don’t want TB to be a boring place where everyone agrees. I think the mods (and TBer’s themselves) do a pretty great job of keeping the conversations civil, and even though I feel like it used to be a little friendlier around here, I still think the community here is a better group than other ‘gear pages’ *ahem* …if you know what I mean… *winks*


Okay, that said, I’ll get to the point. Maybe I’m getting corny, but I love to see NDB posts. I’m a gear nerd who’s never been particularly wealthy, and I know how excited I get when I’m able to get my hands on something I’m really proud of, so maybe that’s it. Sometimes new gear comes easy, other times a new bass can represent months of saving, extra shifts, sacrificing other gear that you like, soul-sucking casino gigs, putting the water bill off for another month(not recommended) and even more perilous than any of those; long, carefully laid justification arguments to our significant others. Regardless of your income that’s all scalable, btw - whether you’re making sandwiches for a living and aspiring to a new-to-you Squire, or pouring over spreadsheets because you’re dying for a shiny new Custom Shop or Fedora or some other bass made from dinosaur bones and moon rocks that I’m too poor to have even heard of.


NBD posts are a celebration. There are plenty of threads to argue about specs, finishes, companies, etc. and that’s cool, but unless the OP asks and/or opens the door for that criticism, a NBD post is a good place to say something nice or move along. It’s a party, and maybe peeing in the punch bowl makes you feel awesome, but it’s at best low class behavior. I promise letting someone have a good day once in a while won’t kill you, even if you think what they are proud of is dumb. Maybe that person will be slightly less inclined to call your dumb tastes dumb in the future and we’ll all be better for it, idk.

I agree with everything you said. It’s a shame you had to post it. Me, if one of our community took the time to post their latest acquisition, most of which I wouldn’t never buy, I still acknowledge it with a congrats or at least a very nice at a minimum.

We grow as a community through each purchase, through each post, and the world is a better place for each note we play. Let’s keep it positive.

Oh, I'm glad you are here to do this for others. Just wish there were more celebratory posts when others post about their happy NBDs.

Some people thrive on drama, some are just a bag of Richards. Facts of life. World keeps on spinning. Brush it off, but I understand the reasoning behind the post. Any unsolicited negativity in a NBD drives me nuts.

Eh, if someone feels the need to make a thread bragging about their new gear (because let's be honest that's what N[fill in the blank]D threads are), that will have to come with the risk that there will be a negative comment or two. If one can't handle that risk, an internet forum is not the place to be.

I'm not saying I support negative comments, it's just that anyone frequenting a forum should be capable of dealing with them. It's not the end of the world, and we all have more important things to get worked up about.

It's become toxic? It's always been toxic. I remember trolls and petty flame wars on usenet. I bet they were on BBS's too but that's before my time.

I enjoy the NBD threads...I got nothing but love on my last one and it represented all the sacrifice you described. I refuse to do the math on casino gigs I get to do to pay for it. There will always be negative musicians, I've played with many, no regrets.

I definitely have my critical moments when it comes to the acquisition of gear for gears' sake, and I definitely have my opinions on focusing on the gear involved instead of the musical output. I've been vocal about that in the past and in the present, and I won't deny that. (I'll also freely admit that I'm a hypocrite - I have more stuff than I actively need to make music.)

But NBD threads - I've only commented on a few where I thought I had something relevant to add. Usually I will leave a like if it's interesting to me or I'll leave it alone if it isn't. I myself have posted three NBD threads as a member here. I personally haven't seen negativity in those specific spaces, and I do hope that we can continue to support musicians who get a new instrument, no matter what it is. Well-thought-out critique is a a good thing, but we have other spaces foe that.

I'm happy for those who have something to celebrate, so I enjoy NBD threads even if their new bass isn't for me. It takes a real schlub to come into another's celebration, make it all about them, and suck all the happiness out of it.

My standard post for a NBD thread is "Congratulations & Compliments!", and usually a if it's a bass I really like. I may, rarely itemize details on a few basses. Not many.

If it isn't something I care for, I simply don't post in the thread. It's a well-learnt Mom-rule; If you can't say something nice, keep your mouth shut.
