So just wondering... do you guys who put out a nice spread usually rehearse on weekends, or on weeknights?

I used to play with a quartet and the guitarist would have us over on Sunday to "rehearse", really just to play and jam, and he'd always make us some fantastic food. We'd play about 2 hrs, eat, and then play another 1 - 2 hours. It was fun but it would eat up my Sunday afternoons and evenings and eventually I had to quit because of the time commitment.

On a weeknight my current rehearsals go 2 to 3 hours, so we'd lose some valuable rehearsal time if we stopped to eat. So I am curious how the timing works out for you generous party-throwers. Thanks.

When we get together on weekends i will sometimes make a slow cooker of some beans or soup and crackers etc. before our members got scattered into several states we would have a band family dinner party a few times a year. Whoever hosted assigned each member some food item to bring and we'd sit down and have a little social time with the whole gang.

They way I figure is that if band members are willing to give up a Saturday night to play a gig then they should have no problem giving up the same amount of time on a gig free week end. I personally haven't been able to get together on a week night for the last 10 years due to work schedules. So yes I do have my own selfish reasoning for this thought.

.

Both, with many rehearsals being after work or Sundays after those that play church are done. Friday through Sunday morning is usually booked for most of the bands. Really, the food isn't a luxury; it takes away the excuse of "sorry I'm late, was grabbing a bite" and cuts down on hangry discussions. Everyone's more amenable with some food in them, and nothing I make takes effort.

Selfishly, I'm also a regular home brewer, so I can experiment new ideas on a captive audience. Costs me less than 50 cents a beer to provide the bar.

Usually it's while we're hammering out parts. So, if we get to the end of a song, and I trampled all over the keys player's vocal part, we fix it. While we're discussing what went wrong, one guy will grab another beer and a couple of us will get a bite of something. We just kind of graze during the rehearsal. Nobody stops rehearsal to sit and eat for 5 or 10 minutes.

A recent thread got me thinking about the kinds of food we might eat at rehearsals.

I am the "host" of our rehearsals, meaning they are held at my home.

I usually whip up some fresh guacamole and put out some quinoa chips.

My wife (bless her) shows up about an hour into rehearsal with buffalo chicken dip and pita chips and celery for dipping.

Our female singer runs a bakery out of her house, making cakes for weddings or cookies for baby showers and whatnot. She usually shows up with a couple of plates of amazing cake slices or cookies.

I provide some domestic beers, and those who are more picky BYOB. Gatorade and waters are in my jam room fridge too.

Weather permitting, we have actually grilled some burgers before we jam.

So we do pretty well.

But I'm looking to mix it up a bit. Plus I'm on a major health kick. I would love some ideas. But don't worry about sticking to healthy stuff. I cheat pretty frequently.

Share your favorite rehearsal snacks, or snack ideas.

I actually enjoy munching between songs. We get a lot of work done. But we're also great friends so the social aspect is important to me. Nothing is more social than food. :D

(I'll try to get pics of the jam food next time we get together.)

Ha! Setting up the poll made me realize that I have to work carrots into our snack menu!!!
Nope, we show up, plug in, and get to business. Time's a wastin

And the people I play with all play in other bands, so for the most part any weekend nights we all have free either get booked or jealously guarded for family time, seeing other shows, or travel.

Of course Sunday afternoon/evening is a possibility, and like I said that quartet I played with did it then. But it took too long, and no ballgames, missing time hanging with my wife. I could see a Saturday afternoon r/h but I know these slackers would punt, especially if we had gigged the previous Friday night.

I can see how some nice guacamole and corn chips would work like this. I might have to try it.

While I would NEVER turn down free beer and food, and of course I'd be eternally grateful for your generosity and hospitality, I go to rehearsal with the intent to work, not eat. IMO, the best rehearsals are focused and brief.

Our rehearsals are sparse due to career obligations and they're always weekday evenings. One or two beers and a water bottle keep me going. Any more than that and my fingers forget where to go and and my brain gets clumsy.
But, my goto is veggies and dip and/or pretzels with hummus. I'm pretty edgy with greasy or sticky fingers around my instruments and amps.

"Rehearsal food"?

LOL only on TalkBass...

My band is usually strapped for time and often paying for practice space, so no food, no breaks except to use the head, focus on music because there's a gig coming and we need to get ready.

On those occasions where we practice at someone's house, our "food" usually consists of the liquid variety, but only after we're done, and usually only one because it's late and we all need to work in the morning.

We usually show up already fed at 7. Studio at drummer's house. We usually have a couple of beers over the course of the evening. Easy to sip between songs, hands stay clean.

I don't like to eat when I play. Due respect to Jamerson and all, but greasy fried chicken fingerprints are hell on an Aerodyne!
