Oh it's not "expected". I do it because I want to.

And we add 10+ songs per rehearsal, so we get a LOT done. And we do some intricate vocal songs, not your standard Brown Eyed Girl stuff.

But we also love each other like cousins. So we squeeze I'm some hangout during our time together.

Maybe in a 4+ hour rehearsal we're munching and running our mouths a half hour spread out over the night.

We have managed to find that rare balance of professionalism AND a good hang. I'm enjoying it while it lasts because I'm in rare air and I know it.

same here man, that rare combination of respect, true family like atmosphere make it so much better

when i lived nyc we rehearsed at the "music bldg" 38th and 8th ave....there was a deli right next door. We'd buy a whole bbq cornish hen thing with our favorite beverage...always beer, then for desert some delicious 420.....every week, twice a week for 7yrs

I'm all for having meals with my bandmates as a way to have fun, maybe talk a little band business, and improve the bond among us. However, I generally prefer doing this as a distinct event separate from rehearsal. That way we don't end up with pizza grease on amp knobs and that kind of thing.

Barbecue at my house for the band? Absolutely.
Dinner at a yummy Mexican restaurant? Sure.

BTW, it's not great for a singer's voice to eat shortly before or during a rehearsal.

The way it should be!

I have to say that's the way it's worked in most of my bands as well.

The WAS a period of questionable productivity in one band about 15-20 years ago...what started out as a couple of pints during rehearsal morphed over time to killing a 2-4 between four of us...and one of the guys didn't even drink! Followed by several hours playing XBox and eventually sleeping on the couch. These were Thursday PM get togethers so my Fridays at that time were not spectacular. Made to work every time, though!

That all stopped when my daughter came along.

My last gigging band, we'd go in with a plan....work on X,Y,Z....wrap it up often in 90 minutes. We'd do that maybe once every three weeks on average while doing 2-4 gigs per month. Usually working out new tunes. Drummer having pre-teen kids with bed times helped keep us on track.

I will say this though - the more "extracurricular" types of rehearsal/jams/whatever built a lot of camaraderie and friendships that have survived the decades. The bands where it was "all business"...not so much. Different type of camaraderie. Such is life.

Pretty much this.

If its a weeknight rehearsal I've already put in a full day at work, and have already eaten by the time i got there. Im not going to want to waste any time on food as enough time is already wasted by some of these people.

Sometimes they will show up with wings or something, and a good 45 minutes is wasted while they consume them. Its frankly irritating as all heck..ESPECIALLY given the fact that the drummer and myself are really the only ones with real day jobs. We aren't going to waste any time.

Maybe if it was a Sunday or Saturday afternoon...
You need to start setting "ready to play" times instead of arrival times. In my band I try to make sure everyone's ready to play at a specific time, which usually means the drummer arrives 15 minutes early and the guitarists get there five minutes early.

It can be a fine line. In my band, our distractions tend along these lines: Someone will play a riff. Someone else will jump in. Whole band starts up on whatever song that is, and then we all start singing in three part harmony.

This would, of course, be a song we had no intention of playing. These are our most fun moments, only because we can all do this, and that's because we all have good ears and great memories for music we've heard. We've brought in a few great cover songs this way- Something So Strong by Crowded House and Message in a Bottle by the Police are two that we added by just pulling them out of our butts like this at practice. Yeah, we did go back and listen and refine them once we had them on our list, but we could have gigged them just the way we did them that first time and it would have been awesome.

But as much as it's fun, it doesn't get us any tighter at the stuff we're supposed to be working on, so nowadays we allow ourselves some fun but also try to weave in the stuff we actually need to play. As long as we're not messing up at gigs, I don't really mind.

We go to this place that rents out fully decked out rooms. Way easier and it has the added bonus you bump into friends as well.

But the food is limited to a tosti and or a snickers mainly.
Couple of beers do nicely.

Hardly eat much before anyway, playing on a full gut is just horrible.
A sandwich or something like that one or two hours prior is about it.
