Threads concerning heavy metal: music's true nerds?

I knew a metalhead in one of my college classes who had the nerve to say this to me:

"You listen to Amon Amarth but not Dying Fetus. Don't be a pussy."

Not ALL of us are nice people in life. Some people are real arseholes. I am privately misanthropic for this reason, among other things which are not relevant here. Having said that, the rest of your post sounds about right to me.

I don't understand why you would take offense to the guys question. No metal head would. He was making a point not insulting you.

I can remember in middle school some KISS fan offering me Iron Maiden's Killers tape because he didn't like it… I didn't call him a sissy then…(Free Tape!), but several years latter, I made my metal snob opinion known.
Dude still loves KISS. I dislike Slayer and love Steve Vai… greatest player on any instrument I've ever seen live, and plenty heavy as solo act.
I feel, upon further review, Anthrax and Megadeth are better than Metallica; Judas Priest is better than the Scorpions, but Maiden trumps them all. Harris =

I love Lars' band and the Scorps, too, but give me some Queensryche and Fastway with a side of Van Halen, thank you very much!

for example and I'm sure these idiots could spit out about 50 more "genres"

Completely oblivious to the fact that they all pretty much sound exactly the same.

Eddie was an absolute monster (see Fair Warning), his big brother too. Live, it was a circus show! Dave was a pitiful singer, but the band turned love song rock with Sammy :scowl:

Oh, don't get me wrong, there's no disputing Eddie's guitar skills. Just their music has never done anything for me, and I find David Lee Roth's vocals annoying.

He was not asking me a question. I am not sure where you got that from...

I thought that being a good person (metal-head or not) was about not calling each other stupid names for no good reason and being accepting of everyone. Think about it, calling someone a "pussy" based solely on their band preferences seems quite immature and short-sighted. It IS insulting, especially when said person says it to your face. Sorry, but I disagree with you, seeing as that is not how you gain other peoples respect in any way, shape or form.

I find it sad if someone lets what other people like dictate what they themselves like and don't like.

If I like the way a band sounds, I'm going to like it whether a hundred other people like it or a million people like it.

I really really really don't like gospel music. At all. I find it somewhat irritating, actually. I have no idea why. I don't go around trashing it, though, and saying it's somehow objectively bad. I don't need to insult it just because I don't like it. It's not the music for me, but to someone else it might be very enjoyable, and there's nothing wrong with that. Same with most modern country music. Not everybody needs to like what I like, and not everybody needs to dislike what I dislike.

I do know people whose circle of friends are based mostly on taste in music. My younger brother is kinda that way if you don't like the right kind of music, certain types of metal.

I have never understood that kind of mentality. What constitutes the "right" kind of music and the "wrong" kind of music?

I myself cannot stand the mainstream pop music that is always on the radio nowadays. Especially Lady Gaga (I nicknamed her Lady Poo Poo Ca Ca), and other such artists who, in my opinion, put their image before their music *. It annoys the hell out of me for sure, but I won't insult someone elses musical tastes.

* Unfortunately, some of the more Satanic Black Metal bands also fall prey to doing that. The ones who always talk about "spreading the word of Satan" or other such malarkey.

With him specifically, it's part of an obsession. He's willing to base relationships with women on metal. Needless to say, it's hard for him to find girlfriends and most tend to be more than a little out there.
