Metal has become so hip, I don't like it anymore.

I can remember a time when you'd be instantly classified as a social outcast if you were into metal, but nowadays you see hordes of freakish nightmare caricatures of themselves dressed up in band shirts and leather jackets.

If I like the way a band sounds, I'm going to like it whether a hundred other people like it or a million people like it.

Manowar Joey Demaio said on their website that people are willing to shell out the same amount to see Iron Maiden & Metallica, so they should pay the same to see Manowar.
I call B.S. on that one.
No way I am paying $75 to see them.
Not when Carcass is on tour, playing the same venues, for $29 including fees.

Yeah, but I'm not willing to shell out $75 for any of those bands.

When I saw Judas Priest, Heaven & Hell, Motorhead, and Testament, lawn seats were $25. Even Neurosis at the Regency (gods, I hate that venue) was around $30 or something. I just saw Abigail Williams, who I like more than I like Manowar, for $15.

I myself am a bit of a closeted metalhead, but I'm sure I'm also "gay" in the eyes of most metalheads because I listen to jambands as well,....a most definitely non-brootal group of bands.

TBH,...I appreciate a little nerd-dom over the guarded pretentiousness of the indie scene. I love indie music, but this,..."if you don't know I'm not telling you" stance is a little self righteous IMO. It's very "You aren't allowed to like that band because I liked them first". Who cares.

The early pioneers of metal were Led Zep

this is 1970 and there is clear visual evidence of young british chaps banging their head in said concert and Holy Chit is that the greatest Jam Band ever? Gay to listen to JAM? How 'bout the Deep Purple? and Sabbath had a serious jam quality in the beginning.
Heavy Metal scene… way cooler than fake ass indie scene.

I love listening to metal, and actually, I got hooked on non-metal which led to this. I used to listen to mostly 80's rock, and my favorite band was Pat Benitar (please, I think I think I think I think I just massacered that name...), which led to Evanescence (spelling?), then I got hooked on Disturbed, then Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack, etc., which then brings me to today. I'm gonna probably ruffle some feathers here, but oh well. The stuff I listen to doesn't ever seem to come up in conversations anywhere... My main favorites are Firewind, Nightwish, Tarja, Epica, Amberian Dawn, Leave's Eyes (again, spelling?), Dragonforce (Through Fire and Flames does not count, since youtube is saturated with that song, which is where I first heard about that band), Shakira (yes, she's not metal, but you don't hear about her much), and a few others I can't remember. Am I crazy in thinking these are not popular bands, or do people just not care to talk about them? I mean, I have a wide taste in music, from classical to country to jazz to metal to ambient, but I'm not shy when it comes to discussing my tastes, so I just can't understand if that isn't the case with other people. Certainly these bands must have someone else listening to them besides me...

I couldn't care less about feeling special in such a way. I wasn't actually serious. Well, I was about metal fans around here looking like clowns though.

In all honesty to me there's a difference between true metal heads and posers. True metal heads actually make the best music fans IMO. I play in a band that blends elements of hard rock and metal and i gotta admit metal fans are almost always more loyal, and they generally are nicer people. Posers are the exception. Posers are the the ones that think they know everything about metal even though they can't play anything. Posers like to try to classify metal bands into stupid sub genres and trend hop from one so called sub genre to the next faster then they change their underwear. Metal heads like just about anything that's sounds heavy. So while posers hate on other metal bands with their stupid sub genre wars, real metal heads only hate pop music.

I knew a metalhead in one of my college classes who had the nerve to say this to me:

"You listen to Amon Amarth but not Dying Fetus. Don't be a pussy."

Not ALL of us are nice people in life. Some people are real arseholes. I am privately misanthropic for this reason, among other things which are not relevant here. Having said that, the rest of your post sounds about right to me.
