Three CDs to represent your favorite genre

can't really summarize it besides "post-hardcore" (as far as native goes) I suppose, but the associations hinge more upon the midwestern/northeast punk vibe and mentality

OK, here are some of mine:

Old school heavy metal
Black Sabbath, "Paranoid" - One of the defining albums of the genre, and the one that introduced me to heavy rock. The huge, thick, guitar sound just begs to be played loud.

Judas Priest, "Sin After Sin" - Featuring session drummer Simon Phillips, this is a fantastic recording, loud but very clean. It features taut, precise song structures that are more composed than the Balck Sabbath album, which had more of a blues-jam feel.

Iron Maiden, "The Number of The Beast" - High, powerful, operatic lead vocals? Check. Twin-guitar roar? Check. Occult themes? Check. Many of these hallmarks would become cliches later in the hands of lesser bands, but these guys were the real deal.

I'll bite. Hip-hop:

One Word Extinguisher by Prefuse 73 (instrumental)
Hello Nasty by the Beastie Boys
Prose Combat by MC Solaar (lots of live bass on this album, folks!)
The Renaissance by Q-Tip (live bass here too!)

Ok, ok, that's four, but I'm done now :)

Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra
They all combine the intricacy of Jazz with the energy of Rock.
This should give you a good idea of my relative age.....you kids get off my lawn! :D

Instrumental surf. Hard to narrow it down, as there's such a spread of styles withing the genre. Still, if I wanted to break someone in......



Dick Dale-Surfer's Choice
-the one that started it all

Slacktone-Into the Blue Sparkle
-Dave Wronski is a monster. Possibly the best surf band out there today

Bambi Molesters-As the Dark Wave Swells
-Croatian surf band, showing just how far surf has spread.




I could pick 20 and still not have covered everything.
