I've been going through a Melvins phase lately (got to see them again on Monday night). I realize they're not quite a genre unto themselves, but they do have a an interesting combination of oddly phrased megaton heavy riffs, an interminable swinging groove, and soaring vocal harmonies.

Newer Progressive Rock/Metal. Not older albums, or the best, in fact, not even some of my favourite CD's from their respective artists, but when I was about 12, this is what I heard that turned me on to music outside the mainstream rock/pop spectrum. They're very accesible to people from different musical backgrounds.

I'd also like to mention Exivious - Jazz Fusion Metal! First time I heard a fretless bass!

Great list. I picked Porcupine Tree and 10,000 days too. I chose Ghost Reveries, but I seriously considered putting in a DT album... Nice choices!
