Thumb Rests

I am finally moving away from using a thumb rest. I sometimes play with my thumb and I found that the thumbrest got in the way. I also found I tended to play in only one position with the thumbrest. Basically, for me, the thumbrest was a crutch.

Plus, trying to find a thumbrest locally every time I bought a new bass was a pain in the butt!

I am not against thumbrests. They really give a good solid place to anchor the thumb. I may even go back. But I am finding it very liberating to have removed them.

P.S. I now rest my thumb on the pickguard.

I actually do not have any bass with a thumb rest. I have my thumb on top of the neck pick up. I have the freedom of movement without the interuption of a big chunk of wood. My new 5 string, however, is very much designed like a MM. The pickup position is great for sound, but it sucks for hand position (For Me). It is the only reason I sold my Sterling. A very small very low profile thumb rest is my answer. Since I built my own 5'er, I do not want to sell it. Plus, I play out way to much to have time to develop a free hand technique.

Hi - I make really nice exotic wooden thumb rests for bass guitars. . . ebony, rosewood, kingwood, flame maple etc.
