My new to me Thunderbird Pro IV at the blues jam.

It's not a Gibson, it's not an Epi and it's not officially even a bird, but I like to think of it as a Spector tribute to one of the coolest and most original body shapes Gibson ever came out with. This poser is pimped up with the holoflash finish. Someday I hope to find the perfect Gibson Tbird for me, until then, this will have to do.

feel free to delete this post if it doesn't qualify as a bird wanna be.

Absolute beauty except for the headstock, I don't really like the headstock shape though....:hiding:

Time to catch up on the list!
Hopefully I haven't missed anybody, PM me if I have.
Welcome hillerup #305 with the cool Epi's and GBassNorth #306 with the Spector Holoflash.
Thanks for the gig pics Unclejackrock! As always we encourage that here :)

OK, here I am gigging the Bird last night. Loving it! Am I in the club now?

This is what I deserve for trying to do this without enough coffee in me.........It's still early here on the West Coast!

You're totally there Kevin, # 307 on the roster, and thank you for the gig shot too! :bassist:
Yes, I'm embarassed!

Absolute beauty except for the headstock, I don't really like the headstock shape though....:hiding:

I'm with ya on the headstock shape. The Tbird headstock, especially the one with the body color trim around the edge looks fantastic.

I've been sitting on the sidelines for a while looking at a number of Birds, played a few new ones (black goth style) in the guitar shops but I really don't know much about them. If I were to buy a Tbird and wanted to stay under a grand new or mint used condition, is there a "sleeper" model out there I should be looking for?

Good question............

1K and under 'Birds, some are rare therefore "sleeper" and well worth it.

-Greco, esp Thunderbird II - I've owned about 70 basses in my life, this by far and away the loudest, raunchiest most beastly sounding bass ever made.
-Orville, Gibson Japan, when you can find them, these are very nice QC set neck 'Birds, very nice!
-Epiphone "Elitest" again from Japan, I think the same factory as Orville, set neck but with different pups.
-Epiphone Pro, most every body loves these, a nice step up from the standard.
-Epiphone "Classic" These are just out, with Gibson USA pups - we're all talking about them!
-Burny, Pretty nice set neck Thunderbird, huge headstock, not for those of weak constitution.
-Cataldo, Carlo makes some great basses at a very reasonable price, check out the ones posted here in the thread.

Anyway there's a start, I've probably missed a couple too - It's Monday AM for my work week :o

Thanks for the tips, that's a great start and will keep me looking for a while.
BTW - your band Rocks! Love your cover of She Sells Sanctuary, really tight and lots of stage presence. Keep on thumpin :bassist:

I may have a 2001 Gibson Blackbird in my sights. It needs a bit of restoration work but I'm mighty interested ( it would look nice alongside my standard Thunderbird IV ).

Before I commit I just thought I'd ask of anyone who has used a Blackbird has any comments. I hear that they have worse nieckdive than a regular Thunderbird ( although I find that mine balances quite nicely ).

Any thing I should know guys?

Darren

i used to have a Mk.I Blackbird, kinda wish I'd kept it - maybe I'll get another. FWIW I found the lack of controls limiting when playing at home, all or nothing all the time just doesn't work, so I'd suggest a rewire to conventional VVT, you'll be much happier. Shapewise they are the same as a standard Gibson........Neckdive? what neckdive :)
One thing I'd head a few times about these is that they were of fewer ply constuction 3 vs. 9, I don't know if it's true so perhaps present owners could chime in.

I find with my BlackBird that the neck dive totally depends on the strap used. The strap that came with it is leather with a nylon weave backing. That makes it dive like crazy!! If I use one of my regular leather or suede straps, it stays put. Also since the one you are looking at is a beater, it won't hurt it any to relocate the strap buttons to where they are on a regular Gibson Bird.

There was one for sale recently that I was trying to buy and it had been stripped to a natural finish. There were no walnut plys in the neck and it looked like it was a 3 piece maho neck. It sold before my contact had the chance to buy it for me. I did end up with a nice, clean original BB and couldn't be happier with it. Like Mark says, the all or nothing control setup is limiting, but I like it's sound and it sounds different enough from my regular Gibson, so that gives me some sound options. I'm glad that I finally bought one. :bassist:

just wondering, I'm thinking of buying the Epiphone t-bird IV, its one of my favorite classic basses ever. what are they like to play? I tend to do more finger style playing although I'm trying to get better at playing with a pic.

Are Epihpone thunderbirds more suited to pic playing? what sort of tone can you get from them? anything i should know before i rush out and buy one? XD

(sorry if ive put this in the wrong place, i just assumed you guys would be very knowledgeable on the subject!)

Thought I'd posted this, but must have forgot.

Thunderbird SS. Waiting to go to the colour shop when my Jag SS gets back. It's coming back Arctic White, with the only other planned change is to the VVT changed to VBT and the tone changed to a Stellartone DuoTone tone pot.
