It's where the body is glued together. You can see the two different pieces of wood. It just seems to be coming apart suddenly. Or it's the first time I have noticed it.

Definately not common Tom, are you refering to the Vee shaped joint between the body wing and the center section?

Is that a crack at all? To me it looks more like the joint between the center piece and the upper wing...
The upper and lower wings have V-shaped joints with the centerpiece - I suppose if they split, they could be glued together again...

Gotcha, I'd been really surprised if that separates, it's laminated pretty well. I have seen the joints become more apparent as the bass ages tho. It's quite easy to see the neck and body laminations thru the paint as they have dried at different rates over the years.
The deed is done. I used the toothpick pieces to fill the truss rod cover screw holes and then screwed them back in. They didn't go in perfectly straight, but they hold. I guess for this purpose it's not a big deal, meaning it's hardly seen.

I'm curious if anyone makes Gibson knobs like ours, but going to 11. Of course we'd be the only ones to see it, but it would be cool.

It doesn't look like there is an actual crack or separation in the photo (that's not saying it isn't there). As previously mentioned, the V shape is the glue joint for the wings and the center section. There does appear to be a short line running off of the point of the V, but that would be very odd (again, not that it couldn't happen).
Not that it has anything to do with this subject; the v shape of the wing is cut when it is machined, but it is fit to the center section by hand (in the neck fitting department) on a wide belt sander. They sand the top and bottom faces of the wing until it fits properly into the center section. There is a lot of craftsmanship that goes into it. They get a lot of practice; each neck fitter has a daily quota, though the ratio of thunderbirds/firebirds to set neck instrumets is fairly low.

Does anyone use stainless steel strings on their newer Epiphone Classic IV Pro basses? I know some manufacturers use cheaper frets on their less expensive instruments, and am hoping that's not the case on this model. I historically use Sadowsky SS on my Warmoths, as they have quality frets. I'm going ahead and try them on my Epi - Sadowsky SS strings are smoother than any other round wound I've yet to find, but thought I'd voice the question.

In regards to the strap question, earlier...I find the MONO straps to be the bee's knees! They breath, hold instruments in place on your shoulders while being very comfortable, yet aren't too thin or too wide. A killer strap - but not cheap. Worth every penny on everything IMO & IME.
