Asking someone to make a decision for you isn't the best way to go, but if the prices are really that close between the old and new, then get the new one. Simple.
As far as an Ebony board goes, they have a harder feel, perhaps a bit more snap in how it feels, but not that big of a deal with the high price of it being 10 yrs old.

This is an Epiphone Thunderbird-IV, bolt on neck, alder body, it's uh $299 brand new here in NYC, too lazy to convert it to pounds, I guess you can get $150 for used one here. If you can find an Epiphone Classic-IV pro it's way better than the standard in terms of sound and feel, but it's more expensive.
For some reason I am thinking you are saying that the 2003 one is in rough condition and costs the same. Is that the case? Even if it is in good condition it should not cost the same as a new one. The only real question is what do you prefer: A 10 year old model or a brand new one? Only you can decide that.
Well I got my hands on my TBird today. Not too bad condition wise, scratches and dings here and there but nothing bad, and nothing that affects playability. It plays great, and it sounds awesome. The ergonomics remind me very much of the Dean Explorer bass I used to own. I guess it's because of the somewhat similar shapes. There's 3 strap buttons on this, and if I use the one behind the neck rather than the one on the upper horn, the neck dive is minimal. Nice low action, and nice full sound, the pickups are very blendable which is nice. When everything is wide open it kind of sounds like a beefed up Jazz Bass to me. The tuners are nice and smooth and seem to hold nicely. It's a lot better than what I thought it would be, that's for sure.
No pics right now. Overall it's a nice bass, but if I can't get used to the ergonomics, I'll probably end up selling it. I should easily be able to get what I paid for it as I know a couple of people that wanted it.
There's a bit of tearout by one of the screw holes under the pickguard, the wood is visible and looks like mahogany. I just converted the money I paid for it and it comes up to just under $165.

Good man! I know what you mean about the similarity to the Explorer - I have an old Epi Explorer which is a lot comfier than I'd thought. I put that down to many years of T-bird playing.
The Explorer is even longer than the T-birds, which is a bit of a piglet for transporting it around.
There have been heaps of Epi T-birds going through eBay UK recently, getting between £100-150 on average. Distinct lack of Classics, though. There were two white ones up just before Xmas - one went for £280, the other one was withdrawn from sale, presumably someone made an offer that was accepted. Not seen any other used ones at all.
Personally, I've never tried one of the standard Epis though I believe my Blackbird is similar. It's currently my fave to play, beating the Classic into 3rd place behind my Gibson as we speak.
Gibson Beef. Ok Here is my rant of the day. I live in Canada and I can't get the gibson Non-Reverse Thunderbird A while back I started to save some money to buy one. Now I'm ready to get it Gibson does not make it any more. The kicker is that ther is only one importer of Gibson in Canada and the online stores will not ship it across the border. I could bay a arm and a leg for one on Ebay.

I feel you, I'm GASing for a NR as well, I had the chance to get one and missed it. Now I have to wait for them to make it again unless I get really lucky. I get that they want to keep production numbers low, but what a bummer.

Used NR RIs have been showing up here and there on ebay for good prices. Keep watching. You'll get one.
if it's the standard thunderbird, it's made from alder, can't say more unless you get us some pics, if your problem is ergonomics moving the strap buttong to the heel of the neck will solve it pretty much, just get some 3inch wide strap to balance it and maybe a gel pad for comfort. Been using those to balance my tbird since I don't have a "fine crafted" beer gut.

Keep an eye on musicianfriend/guitarcenter also. They'll ship used and restock gibson across the border.
