Thunderbird Club Pt.7

And bros I am havin a heck of a time keeping these things in tune. I always loved the body and the slim taper necks but could not get past the bridge and my gut was correct......what to do? I have a neck-through and I use light strings. one song and I am 1/2 step out. Heck I dont even touch it and its flat.

My BC Rich and Fenders stay in tune for MONTHS. grrrr.

Much as I hate the three point, IMO it's the crap tuners Gibson uses that are at fault if the bass doesn't stay in tune. Replace them with Hipshots, Gotohs or Schallers and problem solved.

I've never had any problems with the original tuners - mine stays in tune for months.... I use medium gauge DR Black Beauties on mine and always give them a thorough stretching when I put them on, and usually have between 2 or 3 windings on the string posts..

My epi goth is bolt-on but it has no brand tuners but it stays intune. Mine's flat as well.

Didn't the OP say he's having a heck of a time keeping his bass in tune - Even if he doesn't touch it, it's flat (meaning it doesn't stay in tune)?

I didn't notice the conversation was about drop-tunings anywhere...

I've never owned a bass of any brand that didn't require some fine tuning throughout a night of playing, or even from song to song. Having a tuner onstage inline with the amp is a must for my rig.

I know this is a long shot but....
I had a Blackbird bass that I had modified but after the modifications I located the original pickups and was having the bass put back to
original condition. I took it to a friend to be painted. He had primered it already and it was ready for paint. He took it out to his car to take it to his shop to paint it, ran back into his house and by the time he got back out to his car it had been stolen. (Police report filed) It is a 2001 Gibson Blackbird with no hardware and is in primer. I am in the Greater Cincinnati area, if anyone sees it pop up please let me know.

Sorry for the confusion. I do have a tuner on my rack AND two floor pedal types.


I just got a Goth t-bird that was used, and its not quite as bad as my Pro-IV neck through but they are both pro set-ups I use Dunlop Xl's and they are fresh strings, regardless they are always flat. But I do beg to differ with one of the posts, My American Fenders I do not have to mess with at all nor my BC Rich Widow. I got these T-birds cause I am doin a Marilyn Manson tribute band and there is just not time between songs to tune. I am not beating thease basses. Does anyone know what size replacement tuners to get?

The shafts are approximately 8mm for Gotohs or Schallers, which is 3/8" for Hipshots.

On the stock ones make sure the mounting screws on the back are tight as well as the collars on the front and the screws on the paddles.

Just finished this build. Does this qualify? :D

Mystery make T-bird body. Quilted Maple top, hard ash body, J routes. Finish is India Ink dye, sanded back, then Ebony stain under a thin coat of Wipe-On polyurethane.

Warmoth Wenge/Macassar ebony Jazz neck
Hipshot ultralite tuners/bridge/string tree
Custom Wound humbucking "hot" J pickups by Bullock Pickups
Push/Pull pots for individual series/parallel and global series/parallel. Global series sounds MONSTROUS.
Circle K strings in .142 flavor. Tuned BEAD.

I also own an Epi T-bird, but that's pretty vanilla, and I'll probably be selling it shortly.
