Great! Went into a vintage guitar shop here in Albuquerque called Rumble Seat Music Southwest and saw a 1964 Gibson Thunderbird sing PU hanging on the wall. Also, Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick was in there, so I got to hang out with him and other musicians and talk gear, amps, basses for about an hour.

Then I went to see Cheap Trick perform last night and they were great! No T birds were played though. An excellent day and night!

Our first time at Bogart's in Seattle, pleasantly divey, lots of St Patrick's Day folks out - we had a good night.

well I was at GC on Saturday and was gonna buy my First T Bird been wanting one for a long time I was gonna get a Vintage Sunburst but all they had was the Goth model. which I'm not a big fan of because of the way my SG Goth has worn did I make a mistake not buying the Goth? or did I do right by holding out to just order the Vintage Sunburst? hows the pickups on them are they ok or do I need to replace them with something better? it's not gonna be giged with just used in a home studio. anything else I need to watch for or do I've beeen trying to read all the forums on them but was just wondering if I missed anything.

Well, I had the VS years back before i goth the goth version. Both are good, just the goth has "mahogany" instead of VS' alder wood. but if you like that classic bird look, i'd say you did the right thing.

Personal choice. A lot of thunderbird owners either keep them stock cause they love the sound they get, or change for something different. You can ask Tbird1958 for advice, really nice guy and he'll help you as much as he can. After all, he only owns thunderbirds :hyper: Also, if you have no clue to what pickups you want if you decide to replace them, look for my post of replacement parts, few pages back in this forum. Lots of folks really like the dark tone of the stock Epi pickups, they truly have their own voice. So purely a matter of your choice and since most of the replacement options will outstrip the price of the bass - it bears some careful consideration.

I've been finding new sounds out of my bird with my small practice amp at home and sometimes itll sound better with the neck pup alone, some with the bridge, and some with both. My question to you guys, it's not about sound wise it's about looks. Does the thunderbird look better with a single pup and 2 controls or 2 pups and 3 controls?

Everyone has a preference, i'd say single, but then again, you can get more sound out of 2 pups ;)

Wish I knew more, but from what I can determine, Sami Koivisto is a Finnish luthier who built this unique piece in 2000.

Body/neck: mahogany/maple
Fretboard: ebony w/ silver "drop" inlays
Hardware: Gotoh
Pickups: EMG 35HZ
Finish: paint+poly

Andii & TBird Thanks for the info I'm gonna try it first with everything stock and see what happens once I get it they have a couple on order but he wasn't sure if they'd have one by this weekend so I'll call them on wednesday or thursday and see if they came in on there truck.

I think the single-pickup T-bird II's with only two knobs look so much cooler than the two-pickup IV's - I love the simplicity. Too bad Gibson hasn't made a T-bird II in a reeeeally long time.

Sound-wise, I had mine rewired so that the neck pickup is always 100% on, and the old neck pickup volume knob is now a master volume. I usually keep the bridge pickup turned about halfway up, but I'm pretty sure I could do without it.
