Probably just me, but I found out a long time ago that I could massage a fubar’d bass back to life and make it quite respectable sounding. I have never had that kind of luck with bass cabs (guitar cabs yes, not bass). IME bass cabs are pretty finicky beasts that just don’t sound right without the right speakers for the cab.
I’m not a sound engineer or a cab designer but I’m a firm believer that there is a ton of interaction between the speakers and the box and the baffle size and location and the soundboard and even the bracing and quality of the wood used. To the point that I don’t even mess around with off spec speaker switch outs anymore (again, open back guitar cabs yes, bass cabs no).
