Thunderbird Club

Andy, I regret selling my BaCH NR, even though I really just play my Reverses out it was a great sounding (mine had a single Lull Pup) and playing bass, other than a '73 Rick, it's the only other I wish i hadn't sold.

That's my dilemma. I really like it and it sounds great so I should probably keep it. But there might be someone out there that might use it a lot more. Not making a decision tonite about it tho. Thanks for the feedback Mark

Very compact, & will be building a box around it after to be able to carry safely around to gigs.
I have a couple boxes to build when I get a chance. One is for pedals. It's not going to be a very big box. The other is for microphones. I recently discovered Shure 330 microphones and have decided that I really need three of 'em. They are unidirectional ribbons, which is probably gibberish for most people, but if you are a geek like I am it means they are unusual and have a smooth, airy sound to them. Because they are ribbons, they should be stored with the ribbon vertical to keep it from sagging. Most of them don't have anything like a box these days, since they started making them in about 1957 and quit making them in the early 1980s. So, that means building a box. I have found two of them that weren't outrageously priced. The third one will probably take a lot longer, because that's how it always works.

Making things is a blast anyway. The music room has a bunch of sound control panels on the walls now. I made them using 2" compressed mineral wool panels, ripped down plywood, and acoustic fabric. You can buy them, but making them is more fun. They make a huge difference.

There's always another project. It's like music. You never finish anything without something else to do.

Looks like it'll be here Monday, so here's another teaser...

Colin,
No Epiphone for me, thanks, only Gibson or Lull. Vintage or new would do too!
I know people have mixed feelings about big box stores, like Guitar Center. But they have sunburst 2015s up on their Reverb.com with a "call for price". My guess is that they are trying to get rid of them. I know you are in Canada and that might be a snag (not familiar with their international shipping policies). But I would suggest giving them a call. I bought one of those from them last summer and paid a little over $1k U.S., with case and shipped free (and 2-years no interest financing).

There is also a used 2014 (walnut) up on Invalid Link Removed that is listed as mint condition. You might want to check it out too.

Wow. Great pickup. I await the NBD.

What do people do for stands? Normally a bass is on me or in its case but there may be occasions when it would be convenient to stand them up. There are $10 shortie triangular stands available but they probably don't fit a Bird's asymmetric bum that well. The Hercules stands are geeky cool looking but are they any good? How do they go with nitro finish?
I use the generic stands from GC with three legs that fold out. Fine for me sice kids are grown. Haven't had an issue with T-bird nitro.

My wife got diagnosed with thyroid cancer 3 weeks ago, we went to see the doctor last Thursday and he said that it is still of a size that won't spread and they are going to remove half of the thyroid; fingers crossed but it sounds positive
Colin. Been away and am catching up. Prayers are with you and your wife. My family has endured a two year battle with our 28 year old son's thyroid. I'm happy to say he returned to work two weeks ago after being off for over a year. His condition is under control and he is almost back to his "fighting weight." With time, love and support, your wife will get through this. And so will you. Best wishes.

Hey any of you 'Birders ever tried a Schroeder 215BMF cab?

The 2015s are a nice starter Gibson. If you can get one for around $1099 or less, you'll be pleased. Tapped pickups make for a lot of versatility. Babicz bridge is easy to dial in. I love mine.

Got an audition Wed nite with an ok rock band (I need some extra bread). I've been playing my Bird a little tonight, no amp, trying to keep from experiencing total left hand atrophy from not playing... I still have it tuned down a whole step to DGCF, and though it kinds screws up some of my old repertoire, it's fun to play- the strings are looser and the heavier gauge feels kind of positive that way.
I may end putting a standard gauge set of Black Beauties on it anyway though and go back to standard tuning- the heavy (115) rounds on it now are pretty tight for tuning back up to EADG, for me anyway, and I'm probably going back to standard. For now...

Reggae band killed it last night at our "second Friday of every month" gig. Some bad-@$$ babes were hitting the floor pretty hard. Nice...

The Fenderbird is coming along, the contour on the back is done, did it with a drawknife, one of my favourite tools from old. The routing under the pickgusrd to allow the wiring from the front pup to get to the control cavity is done along with the 1/4" radius around the front of the body. It was all sanded down to 240 grit and 3 coats of sanding sealer sprayed on and then sanded off again before 4 coats of black nitro over the course of the day, did I mention I hate rattle cans?

Today it got a little cutting back to ensure there were no blemishes before the clear coats go on, so far 2 coats have been applied and hopefully another later on this afternoon but that will be it then until next weekend

Contour done but you can hardly see it

Body after cutting back, it looks all lumpy in the photo but it is flat all over
