Thunderbird Club

Yes, black. Thank you Colin, I may take you up on your gracious offer. Let me check at the band room to see if they fell on the floor and hopefully no broken bits. Thank you again Colin! :)

As it turns out, I found the missing saddle and screw, had fallen on the floor at band jam room. Hoping to get it back in place today or tomorrow. Had a gig last Wed. night and missed my TBird. I brought my white classic but didn't really use it as it has some neck buzz that needs addressing. Spent the evening pretty much on "old faithful" my white Mockingbird. Thank you again Colin for your kind offer.

continuing tale of the fenderbird:

This is just a copy of @TBird1958 post of stripping and chroming a plastic Gibson Pup, without which I doubt I'd have had the courage to have a go at this

Starting off with the bits, 2 x Gibson TB+ from a 2013 bird curtsy of Scott D
The covers I ended up getting from the Philly Luthier supplies after waiting over 3 weeks from Germany these arrinved in 4 days flat.
Xuron 2175B cutters as recommended by Mark, they are 100% the perfect tool for this job

Start by easing away the plastic from the epoxy encasing

Start cutting away the sides with the cutters, this is really easy, it just peels away

View attachment 996417

Then start peeling and cutting away the top

View attachment 996420

Before you know it you have two stripped pups and a pile of mangled plastic
View attachment 996434

As it pops out of the casing the pup is too big to fit in the cover but fear not it's an easy fix

View attachment 996435

With a coarse file ease away the corners of the epoxy and just a little off the length, you don't need to remove much and the epoxy is quite thick so there's no risk of damage unless tou do something daft like use a grinder

View attachment 996436

Then just push them in, they were a real snug fit so there was no need to fix them in any way

The next bit is to fit them and get it soldered up

Woohoo!
Well done! Oh how easy it would be for Gibson to make nickle/chrome plated pickups .

My Hamer pj is one of my all time favorite players, and I can dig into anything with it. I do not undersell the classic and solid value of the pj paradigm. Just been experiencing something new with the advent of the Great Bird in my life.

Recently picked up a 1986 Hamer Cruise bass. Has Dimarzio P-J pickups installed. Sounds and plays fantastic!!

I dont think I had previosly seen our Queens thread:wideyed: now I know what will become of at least one TB+ for my BaCH Bird! When ever she comea homeo_O from being repaired.

I guess the repair is done, waiting for proper humidity to paint?? Weird I know there are parameters but i would have painted it by now.

Excellent, glad you found it, far less hassle

Sorry to randomly jump in an interrupt the conversation flow, though I saw the title and had to jump in and show off my 2014 Gibson thunderbird IV

No need to apologize good Sir, beautiful bass!

Shall I add you to the club?

That would be awesome! Anything I need to be part of the club other than my T-bird?

Okay. Briefly, you are generally called out to run naked through a very public place in your town, city, what have you, screaming at the top of your lungs "THUNDERBIRDS RULE!!" from the time you enter the area and well after you have run through the area.

There are options to the ritual, according to preference or, where applicable, necessity. But that's the essential core of the initiation ritual.

We all did it...

Our Queen will be along shortly to consecrate you for your initiation...

Hey, while we're all waiting for our newest member to get initiated, I've been reading up on the G&L MFD humbucker I'm waiting on. I was going to put it in the bridge position, but apparently it's got a huge amount of low end as well as eyeball-splitting snap. Maybe the neck is the place for it?

Just throwing it around. What if it ends up as the only pup...

Nice! Mine had a 2- band pre installed, to counteract a nasally-sounding honk- because of the body and neck wood/DiMarzio pickups combination. Mine is all a Mahogany of some kind... Is yours the same?

No preamp but if the wood color showing thru the chips/dings can be trusted it is a mahogany body with a maple neck. It also came with the original pickups which are the same as in my black Hamer FBIV (Tbird shape) which sound amazing IMHO. Debating about experimenting and switching them out again to see if they sound as good as the set in my FBIV. They are less aggressive than the typical Dimarzio P-J set that are in the Cruise now (as well as several of my other basses).

Legend holds that one of the initiation options here has something to do with wearing a butt bow but I have never actually seen one. Some suggest wearing a mini skirt. There is probably some kind of drinking involved too, like raising your tankard of grog, as you pledge your allegiance to our queen.

FYI, the Dos Equis "most interesting man in the world" would be humbled by some of the folks on this list (and/or their cats).

And whenever you post anything about the tone of your bass, you can't use terms like treble, mids, etc. You can only use onomatopoeia, metaphors related to the taste and/or consistency of food and drink, or in rare instances, a posted video involving interpretive dance. Other than that, it is an easy going and fun bunch. Welcome!
