Thunderbird Club

Much knowledge of electronics is something I never acquired. Some players really know this well and some people are super players and know little about it. I'm neither.

The most difficult thing with changing a cap is the soldering, that's takes a little skill and practise. I went to school for electronics years ago and have forgotten most of what I learned(?) but have retained enough to troubleshoot and change stuff, I'm nowhere near being a tech.

Why do I get the feeling that there is an embryonic cult growing up here around those strings?

They're good strings! They're not perfect for every Bird I own but they work really well with a couple of mine.

How do they sound compared to Rotos?

On My 4001 Rotos sounded good for about a week, after that they were not so good to me. SIT's have the 'new" sound, but they're very good in the Mids, both lo and Hi, perfect for my '89 with Lulls!

Played the SIT Power Flats on the gig tonight. Still liking them. Couldn't get the EQ on the amp quite right. Close by the last set.
To elaborate: The amp is ~6' behind me. The controls are on top rear. I set it with a sound I liked-'til we all got playing. It's nearly impossible to get to the amp to make adjustments during a set, so I f---ed* with EQ on our breaks. I think the amp stand I was using was the wrong one for that room. Oh well, we weren't exactly makin' musical history tonight. (translation: nobody but me GAS what I sounded like)

I hope you at least had fun!

The gig went well. Good crowd, appreciated us. The load inandout during the T-storms kinda put a 'damper' on the evening(I got damper than I like to be).
Restaurant/lounge gig Saturday night. Weather prolly the same(it's FL). Same PA rig, not sure which bass I'll use. Depends on the amount of available space-per usual.

Like all D'A strings, they have no character to my ear. I don't get why they are such a popular string(s).

As mentioned above they're cheap and available everywhere. Very consistent quality, never found a dead or faulty string from a package and I've used them a lot.
They might be neutral sounding but that's not an issue for me since I usually avoid using a straight D.I. sound anyway.
The EXL170 is my usual choice for every bass I own. I currently have Pro Steels on both of my 'Birds and they are indeed a bit scooped as mentioned by you (took me by a surprise a bit) but they sound better when played in. I think I'll go back to the "standard" 'though, they are a bit cheaper.
They also make a good set for a 12-string bass which is a big plus.

That I can do. I've even changed pots and PUPs before, but that's about my skill level. People here have helped me understand caps better. I'm nowhere near being an assistant to a tech's assistant!

I don't know why people keep suggesting that cult thing. We're just normal people who have a similar interest in SIT strings (and "Our Dear Leader").

Glad to hear they may work out. It can be a pain to try EQing between songs at a gig. (No kidding, right?) Bad enough at a long rehearsal. I'm curious how they mellow and settle in a month or so.
