Back from seeing my third night of the Sound of Music Festival. A few thoughts:
Finger Eleven (formerly the Rainbow Butt Monkeys) closed. We left early because the kiddo was getting worn out. And we have seen them before. Local boys, so absolutely packed. The best part is Rick Jackett's stage presence. A huge mass of hair constantly moving and some of the best guitar tricks (have to be seen to be believed - playing while swinging the guitar around by its neck).
Bif Naked - great pop/punk songs. Very good stage presence (also seen before). I still wonder however; how is Bif Naked appearing fully clothed? A lot of talking between songs. I appreciate that the songs have a greater meaning (I love myself today, daddy's getting married, etc.) but I don't need a lecture on each one. My thought is that is what happens when an extrovert is isolated for 2 years because of pandemic and needs to make up for the missed interactions.
Wide Mouth Mason - who knew people from Saskatchewan could play great blues rock... Are there people that leave Saskatchewan and talk about that being the place they are from? Don't most of them just generically say Canadian rather than admit to being from the most featureless landscape in the world? OK, the band is awesome and that is why I wanted to see them. A band you can watch over and over. Not for complex songs or flashy playing, but for rock solid playing. A really tight band.
Econoline Crush. If it weren't for the drug problems that came with the early taste of success, these guys would have been much bigger. Good songs, solid stage presence. Now a great 90s nostalgia act that play really well and have memorable songs. Fun to watch but a little sad because of the potential wasted.
The Warning. Absolutely stole the show. By far the best band I saw on the program. Young, energetic, clearly having fun playing, memorable songs. A really tight band. Hopefully will see them many more times in the future.
There are more bands tomorrow, but the only one I really would want to see is the Tea Party. But it is a school night and Sunday is chores day.
