Thunderbird Club

Back from seeing my third night of the Sound of Music Festival. A few thoughts:

Finger Eleven (formerly the Rainbow Butt Monkeys) closed. We left early because the kiddo was getting worn out. And we have seen them before. Local boys, so absolutely packed. The best part is Rick Jackett's stage presence. A huge mass of hair constantly moving and some of the best guitar tricks (have to be seen to be believed - playing while swinging the guitar around by its neck).

Bif Naked - great pop/punk songs. Very good stage presence (also seen before). I still wonder however; how is Bif Naked appearing fully clothed? A lot of talking between songs. I appreciate that the songs have a greater meaning (I love myself today, daddy's getting married, etc.) but I don't need a lecture on each one. My thought is that is what happens when an extrovert is isolated for 2 years because of pandemic and needs to make up for the missed interactions.

Wide Mouth Mason - who knew people from Saskatchewan could play great blues rock... Are there people that leave Saskatchewan and talk about that being the place they are from? Don't most of them just generically say Canadian rather than admit to being from the most featureless landscape in the world? OK, the band is awesome and that is why I wanted to see them. A band you can watch over and over. Not for complex songs or flashy playing, but for rock solid playing. A really tight band.

Econoline Crush. If it weren't for the drug problems that came with the early taste of success, these guys would have been much bigger. Good songs, solid stage presence. Now a great 90s nostalgia act that play really well and have memorable songs. Fun to watch but a little sad because of the potential wasted.

The Warning. Absolutely stole the show. By far the best band I saw on the program. Young, energetic, clearly having fun playing, memorable songs. A really tight band. Hopefully will see them many more times in the future.

There are more bands tomorrow, but the only one I really would want to see is the Tea Party. But it is a school night and Sunday is chores day.

I don't know, but I bought it modded with KT-120s. It's got an extra transformer for handling filament duties, and doesn't overheat.
Damn thing's louder than a beer-buzzed nun at a farm league hockey game with a bullhorn...
Takes 8-pin tubes.

I'm pretty sure those are heavy duty KT-88's, same pinout as a 6550, 6L6's would probably burn up fast in that amp although they too have the same pinout.

Much of achieving "angry piano" has to do with a loud powerful amp. Pushed, any bass should be able to enter that territory. Didn't John Entwistle do 'Generation' with a P & flats? And you know he was strapped for bear on any stage he played output wise. That and technique - AP is coaxed out of a bass though right hand technique. (and a loud powerful amp)

It's like, just my opinion man...

He ended using up a Jazz with tapewounds. He was using a Dano Longhorn but kept breaking the strings and the strings weren't available in Great Britain so he got sick of buying a new bass everytime he broke a string. He like the piano sound he got out of it though, I think he said it came with round wound strings which gave him the idea to talk to Rotosound about designing some roundwounds. He endorsed them for years, they used to have his picture on the sets. Whatever amp he used in the studio was on the point of breakup.

Yup featureless. Recall that Wanda took pictures of grain elevators because there was nothing else to take pictures of...

The moon has a more interesting landscape than Saskatchewan. When you dog runs away you can still see him going for two days. Mathematically, a pancake has more features than Saskatchewan.

The opening scene of the first episode of "Corner Gas" when Brent referred to the "majestic purple mountains" hooked me. Loved that series.

I saw The Tea Party a whole bunch of times between 1995 and 2003. Consistently one of the best live bands I've ever seen.
I had tickets for a triple headliner show - The Headstones, Wide Mouth Mason, and the Tea Party. The show was postponed/rescheduled twice for Covid before they finally refunded it. Disappointing; it was an Xmas gift to my brother and SIL.

I have one of those Rheem Kee Bass* thingies. That is not the sound it makes. It sounds a helluva lot better than a 7ender keyboard bass.
EDIT: in other words, the video is bull spit(sp?).

I have a Hohner Bass 2. It definitely doesn’t sound like that. Kind of clavinet-ish.
