Thunderbird Club

A couple of things jump out.
Lots of T’birds with bridge pickups at 14 1/2” give or take 1/8” or a 1/16”

Also it seems the basic Epi IV lands closest to the ‘64 pup position. Neck anyway. I know the sample size is very small but I thought it interesting.
My Goth neck pickup is noticeably closer to mid than my Gibson’s.

I’m now wondering if anyone has ever dropped some Thunderbuckers, Lulls, Lollars etc into a basic Epi IV or Goth?
Since I got my CP, I really am thinking about changing the pickups on my IV. I hate soldering, but definitely worth considering. Just not sure which pickups would be the best choice.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR HONORING US WITH YOUR BEAUTIFUL PRESENCE!!
Thank you for your beautifully kind words too! What a fun day and most importantly, what an amazing group of folks….. we got to do it again…move over Burnin’ Man!:hyper:

Burning Bird!

Yeah, I'm sold on them. Listening to Veronica's Lull next to everything else, I almost think it sounds better than the '64. Blasphemy, of course, but it's not the first time I have committed blasphemy.
Mind blown when we played that Thunderbird. If you can get a set Dave, go for it! That would be the Stealthiest Epi ever.

Gotta start somewhere. I think if you just take your time it shouldn’t be that hard.
I've replaced electronics, pickups, tuners, and bridges, but on really inexpensive Chinese basses. The pickups, save for a SDQP jazz pickup, where drop in. With the jazz, I had to do a very minor amount of filing as the tab spacing was off a couple millimeters. The Lull video is definitely more involved.

My VP has a neck pu/12th fret distance of (from the 12th fret to the leading edge of the pu) neck 10.25"/bridge 13.25"

Here’s Jason Lollar himself installing his into an Epi IV.

After watching the video, I'm really scared. Shims, wood spacers, and soldering, oh my.

I watched a bit of that and I have to say it is NOT how I would mount a set of any pickups into a Bird - that was not good.
I have to go run errands, back later to explain.

My PF350 is quieter than the D800+, but I still hear it.
The fan on Ampeg 3Pro's are too noticeable when nothing is going on. Mine never got very hot (no crazy volumes either), so I always wondered why they didn't use a slower fan or one with less aggressive blade angles. But I think it was more motor than blades.

I've never played them, but I don't doubt they are that good and every bit as good as you say.

Other factors may be involved as well. My '64 Epi and Thunderbird don't sound the same. Of course it could wood, fretboard, and since fingers have been replaced with purple silks, there's that too.

From a respected voice here, Thunderbuckers seem to replicate the 60s better than anything he encountered. But I don't thing he's tried Lull's. Those two would be at the top of my list and I'm sure I'd be happy with either one.

If we're talking about the video posted here, those are Lollars. Not sure if the sizing is the same for the Lulls. Veronica would know best, but I thought I saw that they don't sell them anymore.
