Thunderbird Club

Does anyone here own an Orville Tbird? I’m wondering how close they are to Gibsons.

Mine's a bit unusual as it's a been modified and refinned. It has a two point and was painted by HMR Guitars, it is a set neck bass and is very well made, typical Japanese craftsmanship. Quality wise it's better than the Greco or an Epiphone, it feels and is substantial. In terms of overall feel of the neck it's certainly comparable to my '76s, the only place it really could be better it the pickups, when I bought it, it had Gibson TB Plus with chrome covers in it, they were "ok" in this bass, not great, not much sparkle to them, to use Scott's phrase they were a bit like hitting dead meat with a stick(or something to that effect). I put some EY Guitars pickups in it and while they are better in some aspects, they don't hold a candle to the Lulls, Greco or new Gibson pickups. Honestly, it really deserves some attention on my part, maybe a good time to start scouting around for a new set of pickups as a winter project.

Yep, similar story here. I like the lighter gauge because I do a few bass lines with string bends, and less work is better over the long haul. But that feel does put me right at home, when it was new and the world was open. It still is, it's in your attitude...
I have down-gauged* recently because of hand issues. Now I wonder why I thought I needed heavier strings...

* down-gauge - a new word meaning reduction in the gauge of bass strings.

I’ve been watching out for good deals on a Casady bass for a while and ran across this one…

seems like there’s always a bunch of used ones for sale any where you look, but the used prices are ridiculously close to the new prices so I’ve never bothered to buy one. This one at $485 is about the lowest cost one I’ve ever run across, looks pretty nice too. Unfortunately, I’m really not in the buying mood right now.
That's a great deal! I just made a black pickguard with a chrome E for mine:
