Thought that was quite subtle - only insulting if you know it is.
As was said, much of the 'problem' is an obsession with 'cutting through' a mix, rather than blending into a seamless whole - musicians should serve the music, the music ain't there to serve the musicians, and anyone who thinks otherwise is likely a very high score on the bell-end scale.
One thing people never seem to talk about much - and a word you never hear these days - is *taste*. Probably my favourite guitarist (apart from that honorary son of the Geordie Nation J M Hendrix, who like D G Bradman - that's cricket you barbarians - really needs to be in a category all by himself) is Mike Campbell. And one of the highest accolades one can give Campbell is he's never played an *unnecessary* note.
There are ('famous') bass players who are idolised on TB (not mentioning any names) about whom the same cannot be said - ie they peddle the worst in clanky soulless, empty, narcissistic 'lead bass' bollox, and frankly are fvcking sh1te.
