Thunderbird Club

I was reminded today how good a Thunderbird sounds through a massive tube amp and 810 fridge. The doom/jam project is back in business and songs are coming together.
I was going to sell Tubezilla, but upon leaving rehearsal I pulled over and nixed the ads.
What a combination...
nothing like a TBird through an SVT…

I came into Thunderbirds kind of randomly, I guess.

I liked the look, and the size, so I'd been looking for one at a semi-reasonable price, local-ish.
Guy in Davis had the tobacco burst Epiphone I now have - as soon as I got it home & spent some time with it, that was all it took. Fell in love with them

The only non-Thunderbird basses I have now are acoustics.

Or just don't flip it over with the strings off.....

Hi- Any idea when the Epiphone Thunderbird first came out? I'm told the older ones are a bit lighter than the 8.7 lb. newer models.
Thanks!!

(that's how I found out they fall out.... )

Afaik, the first Epiphone 'birds were the bolt-ons that came out starting in '99

My early 2000s-ish bolt-on is not as light as my 9lb. '19 Vintage Pro.
It's the lightest Thunderbird I've owned, but I'm sure there's some that are a bit lighter....

Thunderbird adjacent......

Must be Tony Levin's influence but I really like what the compressor brings to the Stingray's sound. I usually only use the compressor as an effect, not an "always on" helper but with a Stingray I'd rather have it on all the time. Here's some noodle with a pretty heavy compression (DOD Milk Box) and phaser.

Been thinking if I should invest into one of those compressors with a blend control. Broughton or Cali76 or whatever those expensive ones are. On the other hand, I don't mind if they color the sound (Milk Box does, as well as my Orange Squeeze clone) as long as the low end doesn't disappear (looking at you Dynacomp...).
That sounded great to me. The sustain it brought sounded full and even. Compressors generally don't sound that good when I use them.

Are the TRC’s on your ‘90’s era GIBSON (not Epi) T-Birds a pretty thin piece of plastic? I’m used to Ric TRC’s which are like 1/16-1/8 ish.

All of my Gibson Bird truss rod covers (Spanning from 1977 to 2013) are thin plastic and typically have some buckling to them.

One of the mysteries of life. Gibson TRCs are thin and chintzy. Maybe someone thought it made a difference for headstock weight and reduced neck dive? It’s Gibson after all…….
