Thunderbird Club

I make an effort to be completely set up at least a half hour b4 down beat, which includes allowing the bass to acclimate to the room.* Then, using the bass's assigned clip-on(each has its own D'Addario NS Micro), I tune up. I usually check again after each break. Occasionally needs a tweak or two.

*all our gigs are load-in/out, can't set up "early", no opportunity for empty room sound check, our PA, no sound man other than us

Oh yeah, I think to get really get in pitch everyone should use the same tuner which of course no one does, at least at the club level. I play with a guy here who accidentally had his tuner down 4 cents, it used to drive me nuts after we'd tune up, he was always flat and I would have to tune down to him by ear, one day I said 'gimme that thing' and realized it.

You shoulda given him yer 2cents worth and split the difference.:smug:

Yes, it does want bright strings.

I’ve been using Dunlop Super Bright Nickel. The 045-105 round wound set.

The pickups on my ‘21 NR were dark as expected, but not as dark as what came on my ‘18 Gibby Reverse (which I replaced with Lollars).

The Dunlop SBN work well for me. My subjective description of tension would be higher than medium. Not taught like some flats, and not too springy. Maybe tight spring feel. I play a lot harder than I should, but I can get a really good growl from these strings with my setup having more relief than some (.012), and probably higher action.

The Dunlops seem to hold a bright tone for about 8 gigs, unless more than a few are outside in the heat. But even as they dull, they still have nice definition and growl.

Also, earlier this year I switched to the Babicz bridge. Same as on my Reverse. I did this for the consistency of setup and faster string changes. The unintended consequence of the change was some weird harmonic overtones. In isolation, they’re not a pleasing sound, but they do add a little midrange push that helps me stand out better with my band.

Maybe it’s all in my head, but I like the Dunlops and the Babicz combination, with the OEM NR pickups.
Good info on the Dunlops, I haven’t ever tried those on anything before. Another suggestion was GHS Boomers, I have those on another Tbird already and was looking for something different.

Regarding the bridge, now you’ve got me thinking. I have two basses with babicz bridges (2015 Tbird and 2013 EB5) and both have an odd harmonic overtone that I can plainly hear when soloed but isn’t apparent in a mix. I just assumed it was the pickups (they both have the same pickups as well) but now I wonder if it’s actually the the bridge instead. I have a spare three point bridge I could throw on the 2015 (assuming it has the same stud layout as other Tbirds) just to see if there’s a change.

My fancy tuner..........
The battery is held in with duct tape, it's so old I don't remember when or where I got it.

I still have my first tuner purchased some time in the 80s.

Or anything Greg Maddox threw.

Him, Smoltz and Glavine made for a very interesting weekend in Atlanta in those days. And you would also run into any one of those other 3 if you survived the Big Three. I do remember Avery, not so much the others. I remember reading somewhere those four played golf together quite often in the off-season.

It's a shame only one Word Series Championship with such a potent pen. When I was a kid the Braves were in the NL West. As a Mets fan I wish they'd stayed there lol.

Anybody touched one of these ? I'm thinking of going hybrid . View attachment 4888775

They were all the rage here on TB when they were new. I tried the 500 watt version, but that was many years ago. I remember liking it and thought about getting one but never did. I'm sure you can find YouTube demos for them. Prices were always decent on those.
