I just completed this project bass and it sorta fits here. The body is from a mid 60's (MIJ) Teisco Del Rey, Silvertone, St George or any number of brand names used then for the exact same product made in the Matsumoku factory. It was a very long (as long as my '64 T-bird) short scale (30") bass and I converted it to a 34" scale using an Epi 'Goth' neck. It has a Guild RI Darkstar single & 500k V/T pots. It's thin (1-1/4" thick) light (8.3lbs) is well balanced and sounds pretty righteous.

Here's the 'Teiscobird' (pre addition of fret markers) with it's same year cousin - my '65 Teisco Del Rey. Even at the redefined 34" scale it's shorter than the Del Rey!

Would have just moving the bridge back (without the neck) have given you a 34" DelRay ?

My Thunderbird just arrived and played it all day.
I was prepared the sound will be weaker in my taste, than my recent bass of the past 5 years.
And yeah at the first play i had to turn up the input gain on my recorder 'cause i couldn't hear the bass out of the song. After some play i started to mess with the EQ on Cubase, and i was surprised by a lot. I could get almost any sound what i wanted from deep punchy lows, to crispy highs (at least on PC). Such and exciting experiment and thinking about what can i do with it tomorrow and in the future.
By the way, my shoulders are dead, i really have to get used to it's balance.
First step: fixing dents, scratches and paint crackings.

No, the nut to bridge length is one factor which needs to correspond to the length of a fretted neck for correct intonation. Think extremes - would a 34" scale nut to bridge work with a uke neck if it was somehow (absurdly) connected? The short answer is no. However, you could have a fretless board and it could work - but according to where the notes ended up on the fb and not where they would normally be found if in synch with a standard 34" scale length.

My bad. My therapist says that I sometimes have a problem distinguishing fact from fiction, which is probably why I have heretofore considered myself to be a real bass player. Although, my P-bass is real (I think?). Normally, I would mention something about ontology here but my therapist says that I also have a problem with being pretentious.

Yes, it's what makes that short scale bass so long (along with a huge hs!) The body is as big as a Fender J body. They used the same neck and body (with a cut-out) for a very cool baritone guitar. Seeing two more tuners on that hs explained why the bass hs look so big. (only a vintage '63-'65 T-bird hs is bigger)

You beat me to it, Michael. And boat fenders are also called bumpers, at least here in Michigan.

Just thought I'd point this out, cars haven't had four fenders in a very very long time. Now it's two fenders in the front and two quarter panels in the rear.

And that comes from an car expert.... So good to have that settled....
