I honestly think some (not all by any means), of it is because they were poor kids from the south that mostly grew up together and did it their way. But I get that everyone likes diff music. They were a live band that recorded....
Part of it (and it factored into their live sound) was that Ronnie made them woodshed *as a band* what many would consider an insane amount. Those guys played their aardvarks off long before they got in front of a crowd as Lynyrd Skynyrd, and much longer before they got into the studio. They were all excellent musicians, but they were one of the very best bands, period, in terms of how they played their music. While I love LS, I don't have to like a band (or musician) to recognize their genius. MO, for instance. They bore me to listen to very long, but they were clearly top tier.
