Thunderbird Club

I had to be sedated early this morning for a stomach exam, so I've been out of my mind for a few hours.
When I access Talkbass, see alerts, think "why the hell do I have so many likes today?".

I completely forgot what I posted in the last few hours; and one more funfact: after exiting the exam room, I took 3 ridiculous selfies, which I haven't the slightest clue how and why took them
I had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy (not the same camera I hope) and when I was waking up my wife was there and a nurse. She said I started opening my eyes and rolled my head in her direction and said, "Jiiiim Beeeeam." She said, "What did you say?" I replied more clearly, "Jim Beam." Her and the nurse cracked up. She told the nurse that I hadn't had any Jim Beam in decades. When she told me I got a good laugh out of it.

I recall seeing discussions that indicated some early Pros used 4 string p/us and they were too narrow.

The official explanation, implying they were not the same pickups as in the IV, is here:

That's interesting - don't remember hearing about that before. I guess they must've been different internally?

I've got an early Pro 5 (2009, first year, I think), but its only real problems have been: the bridge not sitting properly flat, and the humming noise a lot have, that required putting in proper shielding.

There aren't any laughing icons that convey how strongly I'm laughing :roflmao::bored:

Always happy to brighten your day.

Came across this older photo from our softball league. Fun when you can play with a founding member of TOP (RIP).

Jumping the gun a bit on Caturday. What an end to a stressful week. She had exploratory surgery on Mon. and was in a cone until tonight. It was heartbreaking to see her dealing with it. The vet mentioned a recovery suit as an alternative, so I jumped on it. Arrived today and taking off the cone was such a relief for everyone. The camo's kinda cute as well.

I hope your little one is better, Ken.
Much kitty love!

A late happy Friday to my Thunderbird loving sisters and brothers. Long week here and grateful for Friday night to arrive. Spending a little time in the man cave commiserating with my basses. The band within a band has me learning a variety of songs from The Who to Roberta Flack. Never imagined I would be working on Killing me Softly, but Ron Carter's bass playing is absolutely amazing. My Thunderbird with flats is perfect for it.
Have a great weekend folks.

Hoping for a quick recovery! I like the idea of the suit over the cone. Cone seems like some kind of torture, and all in the name of what’s good for them. I dread the day when ours might need a major procedure. Pets, tons of love over a long time, a bunch of pain over some short (hopefully) time(s).

Flipping it should not be a problem.

The bridge saddles do come out. The captive nut at the top of the bridge has an interference thread so it does not come off when you turn the screw to set intonation, but if you hold the nut with a wrench and back the screw out it will come off. Then you can swap saddle position around.

For the nut, I would have a new one cut for left hand. Simply turning the stock one around would not be shaped right. it is square towards the fretboard and rounded towards the tuners. Fortunately, cutting a new nut is not too hard or expensive.

String length won't be a problem. Any set of strings that fits a VP will fit it flipped. All 4 strings start at the same length out of the package. So if a set has a G string that fits the long side of the headstock, then the E will also.

Thank you for the thorough response, that's exactly what I was looking for! I'll probably be going with a set of the higher-gauge Ernie Ball flats (the 55-110 most likely) so with any luck they should do the job.

I'll ask the luthier how much a new nut would cost if he had to change it out. In that situation is it more normal to get one online and get him to install it (I've seen people do this with Hipshot bridges for example) or just go with whatever he has on hand?

Just going through all the responses now, thanks for all the replies everyone, great to see such an active forum.
