Thunderbird Club

The year I went, 80% was so what, 15% was cool, and 5% was great (from my perspective). I got some ideas from it, and met some huge influences (Leslie West and Mike Matthews (EHX, tubes, etc) and some other cool peeps. It’s worth going once if you get the chance, IMO. Had I gone into the tube amp business as I was considering at the time, I’d probably be there every year.

All that said, there’s not a lot exciting in new basses, I agree.
I “attended “ the online one they put on during Covid. Some was pretty good.
A lot of it was boring. But I suppose if you have friends there to catch up with, it would probably be a fun few days.

^^^This is the fruit of the UnGoth-ing. Represents me a bit more. This was a long time coming, & i've had this done for good in 2020. Paint & art work by me.

Pickups are DeepSixx ones since my originals sadly got destroyed (broken wire) from being out of the body through every single mod. New Bone nut, Tuning keys (originals got too loose & flimsy). Real loud, & angry bird xD

I feel i've asked this question long ago, but have no recollection :D How useful is the tone control on a thunderbird (mainly epiphone bolt on versions; IV, Goths, & the likes). I guess i could have the Classic Pro in the fold since its gibson bird pickups of the ceramic magnet kind. Been debating if i should add a Master Volume & tone back into my UnGothed Red/tree bird (been sporting a killswitch since 2012).

Wow Andii, that is one hot looking bass !

I'm far for being technically-inclined, but as for the tone control, I use it on this bass like on all my other basses, I trim off some treble to put forward mids and bass freqs, so its usually set at 75-80%. On this particular bass, the stock tone knob has a wide range because when totally down, the bass sounds like its being played through a house or appartment wall, very muddy and undefined. I also keep the bridge pup volume at 75-80%, while the neck pup is full on, so I get this rather burly sound when played clean. When I add OD from my old Tech21 VT Bass v2 (EQ flat, level at unity, character and drive at 11 oc) which is on 99% of the time, I get this woolly sound that cuts well through the band mix (I use Traynor amps, the 200w, 210 and 115 cabs). I might dial in more tone if clarity is needed, but never go full on (unless I use a chorus and again, only if needed). The more I think of it, the tone knob is practically the only knob I'll fiddle with while playing with the band, so for me it's a must have. I believe @GBassNorth had the stock tone cap changed for a 0.022 on his Goth and I recall him saying it opened up the bass even more and made it louder.

Hope this helps,
cheers,

Only thing missing is an Optigrab. I really like that Andi.

I use 1.14 picks as well, primarily Jim Dunlop U.S.A. "H" - in red, of course.

The heavy gauge BM pick, conveniently (for me) the ones with the red finger-clip, are the same shape, size & thickness, as far as I can tell.

One area of adjustment for me, is the slight texture that you mentioned - on the Jim Dunlops, I keep the writing (textured) under my thumb. The BM writing (textured) is on the opposite side I'm used to, under the index finger.....

But for me, that cupping technique you're talking about, aggravates the problem with my hand that is causing me problems with holding a pick.

So, atm at least, I've got to adjust to these new picks (if they help), or be stuck with only being able to play *maybe* one song with a pick....:(

Do you have issues with your hand?
