It is all subjective, right? Maybe with the exception of Donnie and Marie? Personally, I don't "get" the appeal of bands like the Grateful Dead or Phish. But they are good musicians. I don't "get" Sonic Youth. But they were innovative and pushed musical boundaries. Rush are talented musicians too. However, some of us would rather listen to Dead Kennedys, the Damned or Ramones, where one could possibly question musicianship (which was part of their artistic statement). Their lyrics were arguably not as imaginative as Rush but that's not what drew/draws us to them either. Who among us couldn't appreciate the poetic verse of the DK's Jello Biafra, as he sings: "Too Drunk to F*@k"?
Sincerely yours,
Captain Obvious
Rush is my favorite band, geddy lee's influence for tone and aggression and melodic busyness really came in handy for me playing punk. My avatar pic was taken at a show opening for angry Samoans. The singerand rhythm guitar player in that band (one I was in, not the Samoans),/HATED rush, but the drummer and lead guitarist loved them. Our singer required
$30k of production and several months to track vocals on the album, drummer was done in 3 days (though required much pro tools afterward) and I took 4 days, the first day was a wash because I didn't bring my rig because I thought we were going to just use Greg Heston's vintage flip top like we did for a single on a comp the year before (yes he was co producing it, we brought in big ones, all on the singers labels dime).
Rush fans, 3 days, rush hater, several months.
There was a large portion of punks who didn't like rush, then they all started buying geddy Lee basses, likely for the look and the fast neck and bright sound. But that is a digression. I wore a 2112 button proudly among my punk rockabilly psychobilly and a few metal band buttons on my punked out dickies jacket. I was not punk enough for studded leather and a 77-82 band logo stencil painted in the back, such as the crimson ghost. The misfits and the descendants were my favorites. I went on 2 warped tours. In 2004 our last day was at chula vista's amphitheater parking lot, and the next day I drove back down to see rush there. The timing was perfect, turns out we were at the same venue as them the day before or after for most of that tour.
Generally thunderbirds are very punk, and hard Rock/metal, UFO, Crue etc... So I'm not surprised there are some prominent rush haters on this thread.
