Got a call to day to do a one track session on Friday with a fretless. I have a de-fretted Aria SB700 but decided to loan a friends Ibanez Soundgear as a bridge pickup sound is needed.
I have to say that if I had been playing that bass exclusively a Thunderbird or a Telecaster could feel a bit akward. Very easy to play, weighs nothing, ergonomic etc. Not my fav look wise but I've seen worse and the all-black look is very sleek. Sounds good too.

There was a Rick Turner fretless (someone said Alembic prototype) at the music store on Santa Cruz we went to on Saturday. I don't play fretless much but I had to try it.
That was a very nice instrument. It just had a single Bartolini humbucker and IIRC a Badass bridge.

Perfectly capable of playing with finesse, but he can be a pretty aggressive power player when he gets in that slap zone.

We can have a great, diverse menu. A full bar. Live music Friday and Saturday nights. Chucky and Friends as the house band. Guest performers like Mike Watt, The Nasty Habits, The Eskimo Brothers, Bond Girl, The Sean Connerys, Poppy, Hair and other Thunderbird member bands (sorry Ken, I forgot the name of yours). The bar would feature your beer, local wines, and spirits.

We could have a two-sided menu. Page One: Shawarma (your choice of lamb, beef or chicken), Gyros, Humus, Tabouli, Olives, Pita Bread, and Baklava. Page Two: Salad Bar, Relish Tray, Tri Tip, Baby Back Ribs (my specialty), Rib Eye Steaks, Santa Maria Pinquito Beas, Garlic Bread, and Ice Cream, Sherbet, or Sorbet. Seasonal fresh fruit and chocolate cake. And there would be burgers, links, and fries.

We would kill. It would be the hottest place on the 101 between Santa Barbara and the South Bay Area. We would leave Andersen’s, The Hitching Post (both locations), The Far Western, Jaco’s, McKlintock’s (both locations) and the other Central Coast institutions in the dust

Let me know. I’ll have my people call your people and we’ll set up a meeting.

Those will open up the ‘15 quite nicely. I think you’ll find that the strings on it were pretty dead.

When I adjusted and lowered the string height, I was pretty conservative with the action. You may be able to lower the action another eighth to a quarter of a turn of the saddle screws. Let the new strings settle in for a bit. There is a Scott’s Bass Lessons thread on gently stretching the strings when you first install them. Then work on intonation, string height and pickup height until dialed in. The Babicz bridge allows for the lowest action of any replacement for the three point bridge. Remove the shim under the bridge I’d necessary.

It may strike some as heresy, but I think Son Volt’s first album, Trace, was their best and they haven’t equaled it yet. Nor has Jay on his solo albums.
