That's an old shot of my bass, where did you find that?
LOL - first one that popped up on Google when searching for a pic of a Tbird without a pickguard.

I’m pretty sure the VP has the same pull station, but didn’t have time to take my guard off to check. If Dave is hitting a 90 degree turn on a neck pickup feed he likely has a pull station like this one.

It appears the hot lead was penetrated by a solder hair. Pulled the lead up off the back of the can, cleaned underneath, and then put a small strip of electrical tape under the lead.
And that right there is why I hate wire mesh pickups. Messy to cut the mesh (tiny hair wires everywhere) messy to solder vs standard multi strand insulated wire and too easy to have a tiny loose strand touching something it shouldn’t.

LOL - going through my typical used bass for sale websites looking for gems. Found a couple.

As for Tbird mods, there’s very few things I haven’t done to a Tbird (I leave the defretting to Willy) so it’s a matter of trying to remember which model has which features.
 
Ok, found another issue. Everything checks out UNTIL I put the pickup screw in (lower one near the hole). Once the screw is in, shorted. Must be a bare hot lead inside the can right at the screw hole.
Double check the screw to make sure it isn’t touching the pup wire in the pickup cavity. If it’s not and you suspect it’s grounding out inside the can you could try a hillbilly fix - the screw is a slip fit through the pup can, slip a piece of shrink fit tubing over the screw threads (that’s long enough to poke through the pup back plate) shrink it with a hair blower and reinstall the pup and screw to see if that provides adequate insulation. If you don’t have heat shrink tube you might get by with a tight wrap or two of electrical tape around the threads. Obviously leave enough threads exposed to bite into the wood.

Are you sure your house and its contents weren’t built by Lucas Electric or his American cousin- Murphy?

Teflon tape did the trick and less bulky. Fixed and now back in action. Anyone ever seen this before? Something must have rattled around on my trip back home from the GTG. A lot of hours for a simple fix.
