Ok, found another issue. Everything checks out UNTIL I put the pickup screw in (lower one near the hole). Once the screw is in, shorted. Must be a bare hot lead inside the can right at the screw hole.

So you had two intermittent shorts in different places on the same pickup? I'm guessing the pickup initially had a problem and the previous owner created another issue with his "fix".
On a positive note, you are getting better at troubleshooting

Thanks. No, our first. My FIL always had them on the farm. My Step (real) dad always had GMCs and Chevys. He had a '66 GMC that was fixed up by his son who owned it first that looked great. Stollen from the bad neighborhood we lived in at the time.... Our first truck--now that no family members own one. But I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

I’m pretty sure the VP has the same pull station, but didn’t have time to take my guard off to check. If Dave is hitting a 90 degree turn on a neck pickup feed he likely has a pull station like this one.
