I still can't get over how early the Easter Hot Cross Buns come into the shops now…. This year they started selling them in Boxing Day (the day after Christmas Day or St Stephen's Day). Plus they now make varieties other than the traditional. Which I refuse to buy.

I wanted a heads up comparison where everything was identical. But, a fairer comparison would require me to crank down the neck pickup or use a different volume setting.

If I had a mic, I'd put it on one of my cabinets, which is more realistic.

The purity of running DI into the interface is good. The consistency of your playing helps, too.

I did a sound test on the Probuckers vs SD Custom Shop. First note, though more details below, is the neck SD is really hot. In practice, it wants to have a lower setting on the bass volume and make the adjustment at the amp. I'd love your thoughts.



This is a demonstration of two different sets of pickups in a 2017 Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro. The stock pickups are Probucker 760 and the replacement pickups are Seymour Duncan Custom Shop. All settings were the same and using stainless round wound strings. Recordings were done as a direct input into an audio interface and Waveform 11.

The DC resistance for the Probuckers is 8.4Kohms (neck)/9.4Kohms (bridge).

The DC resistance for the SDs is 7.98Kohms (neck)/9.75Kohms (bridge).

The output for the SD neck pickup appears much hotter than the Probuckers even with slightly lower resistance. Since all recordings were done with volume at 10, the SD neck pickup would do better with a lower volume setting on the bass and an increase in volume at the amp.

Some of the SD recordings are really hurt by that hot signal directly into a SS interface not designed for musical breakup.
As much as I like hot pickups, based purely on this, the Probuckers are the only choice for me. I suspect that if the knobs were twiddled as you described, it would be much closer. There were times (especially playing higher up the neck with the bridge pickup involved) that the SDs sounded really sweet.

I'll make another recording of the SD once I fine tune the setup for those specific pickups.

The Costco nearest us in Simi Valley has 10 lanes for gas and at any time there are as many as 10 to 15 cars backed up in each lane. I don't even bother getting gas there because of the insanity, but I hear it's cheaper than name brand gas.

What case are y'all using for your epi 60s/ Vintage pro t birds? I've seen pictures of the epi cases where the headstock touches the top snug, id be nervous of that hitting something and snapping the headstock. I have also seen pictures of the same case where the headstock has clearance.

No. I only played bass for the trio gigs at the Officer's Club. In the band, I was on tenor sax.

EDIT: Technically, the tenor sax was on me.

Remember: those things were ~45 TUBE watts into 4x10s. Sounded really fat.
