We did pick up Frank's new bike this past Friday, he's a pretty happy guy.

I love my Honda VFR 800.., but lust after a few bikes...

Hope I didn't miss too much. A couple questionable days with Grady and had to skip a few pages. Thought today might be the day we would have to say good bye. The vet looked him over and while his tumor is getting big and looks awful, she was not concerned. We were afraid it was going to rupture or just be to that point needing a decision after a couple days of him not feeling too good. She checked him out and said he's actually in great shape considering his age and issues and said we didn't need to me making any decisions today. We spent yesterday afternoon and this morning thinking we would not be bringing him home--and not sleeping last night. He had a great day once we got home! She said everyone there knows Grady and his reputation for his will to live!

Anyway, bass related, I'm really enjoying the '81 L1k (G&L II in Thunderbird lingo). Maybe too much. This pass sounds fantastic. The OMG position is just that. Sounds so massive it's tempting to use it all the time.

Donnie, every day with Grady is a blessing! So good to hear those blessings continue. Prayers for you Grady and the rest of the family.

I had to look up Doug Rauch - what's the connection?

He hung out with him when he was starting.

Bobby Vega: "I wasn't that consistent with my fingers, so I got dexterity and stamina from the pick"
"A lot of people watch me play with a pick, get ideas, and then play stuff with their fingers that way. If you look at gospelchops.com, you'll see people playing up and down with their thumbs, getting that 16th-note thing, without using a pick.

Dougie Rauch used to do that, too; he played like that with his hands. He used really heavy Fender roundwounds—he'd put a backbow in the neck and then use heavy strings to straighten it out. The action was low and real fast-playing, real punchy. Dougie was a m***erf***er! Hands down, he was simply the best that I've ever seen."

This is a good example of Dougie's pure rock playing.


And within a year or so after moving to San Francisco he was already doing stuff like this with his thumb:

Love the Moto Guzzi bikes!
Although I'm usually more drawn to the Bobber style like their V9…

I have toyed with the idea of selling my 911 and putting one of these in the garage instead, would take up less space…

At 1200cc with 200hp and a hp to weight ratio of 5 pounds per horse power I have no doubt I wouldn't make it very far from home before wrapping it around a tree or some other immovable object.

And as I can't babble about Doug to Bobby I seem to do it here to you. This track of mine has a bass line that is 100% Doug Rauch tribute. I used my Jazz Bass that has a third pickup near the neck and an Acoustic 301 cab IR. The Citroen SM in the pic isn't a co-incidence either (it was Mr. Rauch' car of choice).

Ordered a vintage one last Tuesday. It shipped Friday. It's going in my BaCH II in place of the stock Artec. It'll be a few weeks before I can install it.

That's great about the pup... Good for the heart and everything in life.
Nice about the bass... G&L does intrigue.

That's a cool idea, getting heavy strings and cranking the neck straight from a back-bow. I wonder how that would work for me... I tend to hit hard, and sometimes the string dynamic is a bit of an issue. I have to get control of it, and that changes my original intent. Interesting.

I've used that method with great success on my Fenders, I haven't ventured down that path with my Tbirds. Those neck to headstock transition areas aren't quite as robust.

Thanks, Marshall. We were glad. Hated getting ourselves all worked up and certain it was the end with all the thoughts that go through your mind, and knowing we will have to do it again. But it was great to be able to have him sleep with us (yes, in the bed which is where he wants!), another night when we were sure Sunday night was our last that's for sure.

G&L's are the undisputed kings of pro bass. Other brands offer very good variants - but the L-1000 & L-2000 are hands down the Swiss army knife of basses -

They have their own sound with varying offshoots, some like it and others don't. I get that. I'm not crazy about MMSRs and don't get the fascination as most do, even after owning a couple. Showing there is no right bass or tone. But why people have not been more fond of G&L has always escaped me. They can be so aggressive, I figured hard rockers would love them. But some of it what what the hero's play. Top quality instruments--but can be pricey when new. All three of mine sound slightly different. The '81 is the best by far. Leo did very well...yet again IMO.

Great sounding tone in the clip, as well as nice playing!
