Thunderbird Club

My last 10 years of work I was a Global business manager for a major corporation managing R&D Facility construction projects and R&D Engineering Fabrication and Support operations around the world. After three straight years in a row of Delta Dual Diamond frequent flyer status Delta invited me into the very exclusive and not advertised 360 degree club.

A normal week for me was to leave on Saturday morning from Cincinnati to Fly around the globe for business meetings with a layover in Chicago or Minneapolis, then nonstop to Tokyo, for a couple of hours of meetings in Kobe, followed by a flight from there to Beijing for a full day of meetings and construction project field reviews. Then the next morning jumping on a plane to fly into Singapore for construction project reviews. The next day I’d leave for Mumbai for more project reviews followed by a flight to Germany for construction site tours in Schwalbach, Kroenburg and Darmstadt and business meetings in Brussels. Then a quick flight over to London for business meetings in Egham and Reading before jumping on a train to Newcastle and a flight back home. Basically a full week of back to back business meetings, project reviews and travel around the globe two to three weeks out of every month for years.

A 16 hour flight is a cake walk as long as it’s all first class or maybe business class. I won’t fly coach for any duration longer than a few hours, then again, I was never tempted with offers of stuffed dates and baklava. ;)
OK, I won't be complaining about my trips to the Winnipeg and Regina!

My phone makes these videos.........I don't even have to ask it.
It was a lovely Summer, I will have my memories of you all. Thank you!

Hah! One day of not keeping-up and already way off the back (cycling term for getting 'dropped') I did band managing all day yesterday at Winters' on For Fest weekend. My friend Andrew helped me which lightened my load and made it more fun. We're long-time cycling buds and he's a guitarist. The day started at 11am with a Pirate invasion (!) - 40-50 people dressed as pirates and a pirate ship float pulled into Winters parking lot. (it was part of the annual Sat-morning FF parade. (arrrgh!) On that pirate ship, a pirate band rocked pirate-related song. Pretty fun - and the pirate crowd was enthusiastic to say the least. The day went smoothly and on-time with Bond Girl performing at 4pm under sunny blue skies. The day started out a bit cloudy/hazy (fires up north) but it fully cleared up by about 2pm. The Sean Conneries rocked that same stage at 6pm and by the end of our 1hr set, the sun was dropping into the Pacific Ocean leaving that perfect light to close the curtain on outside shows. The beer garden and inside of the tavern were both packed all day - lots of alcohol was sold! Bands continued inside into the night ending after midnight. Andrew and I got the PA inside and bid adieu - mission:accomplished. Don't know if pics were taken, but "the man with the video camera" Roy was there filming Bond Girl, so I should be able to post something soon.

I'm managing todays bands also, will be leaving soon. Should be less crazy as there will be no pirates and the last band is 7pm (to 8) inside. And I'm not playing today! :)

You miss 12 hours in this group and you might as well pull up a cold drink and kick your feet up cuz it's gonna take you a minute to catch up. Lolol

So I could ask this question in the luthiers chats but we seem to have quite few "get 'er done" types in here. Looking at a bass with an "almost but not quite stripped truss rod nut. Takes a 90° hex key at the heel to access it and it's welded on so it's not getting replaced. At least not without a fight (did somebody say roasted maple?). Any ideas to deal with that?

My brain says a torx driver might be a good ticket. I've heard of those "grabbers" from Stew Mac. Maybe notching it somehow for a flathead? JB Weld :cautious:an extension of some sort in it?

First coat of tung oil. You apply with a rag, wait 10 minutes and then buff it with another rag.
Then you have to wait 24 hours, go over it with 0000 steel wool and apply another coat. If you want it shinier, keep adding more coats every 24 hours.
I never do more than 2.

oh and there’s a danger of SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION, so be you need to be careful with the rags. I just drape them over the edge of the garbage can until they are completely dry.

Looks good - I've used tung-oil but these days I use hand-rubbed satin poly. (many coats) Very easy to control and looks/feels great. Tung oil will amber where as the poly stays pretty much the same over time.

It is a stunningly gorgeous day at the place in the Los Padres National Forest. Getting prepped for winter and making sure the bears don’t break in. There has been a lot of bear activity with break ins the last two months. Knock on wood; we’ve been spared.

I’m hoping to shed some later with the VP. Once the chores are done.

Hah!! It looks like your basses are "gathered 'round" to hope you'll pick one of them!

Came out great! How does she sound with the new pickups?

Actually the nickel finish pickups (Lollars), bridge and tuners came off my TB 2001, so it sounds the same, meaning good, and better (to my ears) than the Bartolini's. I just put a new set of EBCF’s on it, after intonating with the used DM Blue Steels that are on it in the previous pics. Hoping for a good sound at rehearsal on Tuesday. I have never had EBCFs on a Thunderbird yet.

The TB 2001 now has a chrome Babicz, and the chrome Gibson re-issues in it and I’m looking forward to see how that sounds. Unfortunately I need to get some new chrome screws for the Babicz, since it got sent to me with the wrong screws. They sent it with the 5/16 x 24’s but it turns out the threaded inserts in all of my Gibson Thunderbirds are M8 x 1.25.

Kind of annoying. Luckily the fine folks at Babicz are easy to work with.

How did those barts sound?

Sounds like a good time. Sorry I missed it…

Last gig for TSC's for now - time to woodshed our new drummer and learn a few new songs. We are also going to do some recording through a Chabot College music dept gig next month. (students hands-on recording a band's music) BG has a few shows coming up over the next few months.
