Is there anything special about the white epiphone bolt ons? Saw one for sale, it had the chrome pickups with rings, not sure about the neck shape. Seller wanted $250.

I didn't ask him about the serial # or place of manufacture. There were no pics of the back. I didn't save the pics, sorry.

Epi's are very good for the money and $250 sounds reasonable as long as the neck has a working tr and no issues.

DR Highbeams or Black Beauties are my most commonly used string for my Birds.

+ 1 on the DR Black Beauties and Rotosound Swing Bass and Roto's.

They are pretty nice basses in a custom color... Other than that, not much different from the regular ones in Vintage Sunburst.

I got Black Beauties just cause they're "stealthy" on my matte-black bird, but they actually sound pretty good. I get regular props on the bass' sound, and I have to agree it's delivering. Strings are a big part of that.

I have the DR High Beams and they look great against by Goth.
I'm loving the sound also.

My choice of strings, by recommendation, is Rotosound.
Because of low tuning(C) I put on the RS 665LC (0.125 for C).
I needed some time to pick a proper set because I want an "even" tension on all 4 strings and the other 5-string sets seemed more unbalanced compared to this one.
Next set will probably be by DR, or maybe I'll stick with Rotosound.

I'm thinking of trying those Rotosound RS66 in 45-65-80-100 since I'd like a little more meat in the higher strings. Is there a downside to not getting the strings evenly-spaced?

I have Cobalt Flats on the '91. They are close to perfect on that one. They didn't work at all on the '15. It has Hi-Beams on it now, and they sound a whole lot better. The fretless 'Bird has Chromes. It has Alumitone pickups instead of the stock pickups and preamp, so it's a little different. But, it sounds great to me with that combination. They are all a little different, so they all seem to want different strings.

I was curious if anyone knew the model/type of tuners that come standard on modern, Gibson Thunderbirds? Mine is a 2006 with black, Grover tuning machines. I am getting to itch to switch to chrome/silver hardware and am looking for a direct replacement.

I am not against the older, clover leaf style but am not looking to modify the exiting bass in any permanent way. I also don't want the tuning keys to hit each other whilst tuning....

I have Rotosound 77 flats on my 06. They sound great IMHO. I have also had chromes on my Nikki Sixx Blackbird and they were pretty good on there too!

I would assume you could get Grovers like them only in Chrome. As I recall, that's what's on the 2013 EB. You would have to buy two sets, since that's a 2+2 headstock instead of inline.

I put Hipshots on the 1991. You have to special order slightly smaller clovers so they don't overlap, and the screw pattern is different, so there's another hole in the headstock. I think most of us who did the conversion went that way. Just be aware that there will be unused holes under the Hipshots or under the Grovers if you swap back.
