Soundwise after the switch, the nuances were more subtle than i expected, but it really tamed that boom and gave all the strings a nice and more even output.

I'm not sure how i could record some sounds other than to my phone, but it was definitely ultimately worth it to me. It's nice and clean if you use a light touch, and it growls like a pi$$ed off bear if you really dig in! :bassist:

I think all the Rex Pros come stock with a BT preamp. I have a spare trim tone pump preamp lying around but the Haz and its variants have always interested me. The other thing that peaks my interest are the EMG pups with the internal split precision design. I've often thought two of those and a haz would be killer on a maple body bass.

SNCpre (from the Spector group) is making a new HAZ clone with a mid-control. That seems like an interesting one to try. I have one of the last regular versions Sheldon made but now I wish I would have waited for this batch. I also installed dual P soapbars in my Legend 4X. Sounds like a different bass than when it arrived stock.

A more informative question might be - do you currently play Fender basses?

I have plenty of Fenders but my Gibson, Alembic, Warwick and Spector basses are about all that's being played these days. Over the years I've kind of drifted away from the generic sound of my Fender basses and towards the thickness and authority of Humbucker equipped basses.

Funny thing is, I never even went down the single coil strat path on my guitars, I've been a strictly Gibson humbucker guitar guy from day one. I think the only reason I splashed around in the Fender bass pool for a while was because nearly everyone else was in it, just seemed like the logical thing to do. Not so in the guitar world where Gibson has a much larger following in rock circles.

I was only interested in single coil pickups for years - Ric 4001/4005/330/360s, P90s, Teles, Strats. People change.

For guitar I tend to like humbuckers (specifically in the bridge position) for overdrive, and single coil pickups (in the neck position) for clean.

I've never liked strats at all. The middle pickup gets in the way, and the 5 position pickup switch isn't really satisfactory for getting all the combinations you should have with three pickups. I'd much prefer three on/off switches. And IMO the bridge pickup is slanted the wrong way.

I haven't owned either a Fender or a Gibson guitar, the closest being an Epiphone Tony Iommi SG.

For bass I actually do prefer single coils or really bright humbuckers. Three of my four basses have single coil pickups.

What is this 'clean' whereof you speak?

I played with a left-hand guitarist who had a right-handed Strat copy, which gets around the bridge pup thing. Pity about the knobs though ... he was a knob as well.
