Thunderbird Club

2014 Gibson Midtown Signature. Got it 7-8 years ago - was searching for a regular-scale semi-acoustic. Dropped custom Novaks in there, sounds great. The sparkly finish is polarizing, but I like it.
Cool. I didn’t know they made a Midtown in the Signature shape. Similar to my modified Gold Casady:

I bought an Indonesian made '21 black Epiphone Vintage T-Bird wearing Cobalt flats this year when there were a few going for $400 shipped. Very nice condition, played it about 15 minutes and put it up.

Took it to band practice last night to see how it sounded with the band and was very pleased. Very punchy, nice and light, no neck-dive. It's a keeper, and I'm leaving the Cobalts on it. The guys were amazed it didn't dive for the floor when I let go of it (actually, so was I). Heck of a nice bass for the price, or any price as far as that goes. And after 3 hours, no Princess fingers.

I know Doug through ReRanch (Nitro paint and refinish forum) I remember when he was just starting out doing refinishes like all of us. His family owns a cabinet making business.
He graduated to building his own guitars from scratch. He made one Thunderbird years ago. That person still has it. If I remember correctly Doug said it was a real pain in the butt to make and he was going to stick with guitars.
He also makes custom guitar racks,
They used to do a yearly GTG like this club does.

If you talk to him tell him Instagator says hi.

I’m sure being a pain to make was one reason why Gibson reversed the Thunderbird and went file a set neck design. That and the poor sales for the initial run.

I have had Cobalt flats on my VP for years.

Princess Fingers here.... I wish I could play them as they really sounded great on the white VP. That weird hurting feeling is hard to describe, but it was enough that they can't work for me, unfortunately. But the GHS Precision Flats on it now do sound really sweet.

Any chance someone knows what are drop in replacement tuners for Greco Thunderbirds?

I went to replace my Greco machines recently and tried some ½" Hipshot Ultralites (well, tried one), tho the Greco posts are kinda ½" the Ultras didn't fit, annoyed the :poop: out of me at the time !!
The bushings for the Greco parts are not the same size as the bushings for the Hipshots. So I ended up using the ⅜" Hipshot Ultralites and those bushings were a teeny bit loose in the headstock holes but careful installation of the things - marking up and drilling the single screw holes needed and patiently tightening the hex bushings - they are on there solidly and have noticeably improved the neck heaviness as well as having no baggy play (as per the original machines).
The instrument wasn't appallingly neck heavy but would try to drop to the horizontal - now it sits and stays where I hang it with no dive at all!

Seems EBCF’s are all I play these days.
Even when they break in.
I still really dig the tone.
