Thunderbird Club

I've never had a chance to try out a 70s bird. I love the 760s and Greco pickups, do want to try the Gibson ones as well, but the Sidewinders sound interesting, maybe somewhere between the 60s style and the Rickenbacker pickups I've been using most recently.

Good way of describing it.
They’ll do a Ric, a Precision, better then both if you can believe it.
And other gnarly tones most pick ups just can’t do.

This year's GTG is in Seattle, end of July. I have two '76s in the house, it's on the way to Friday Harbor :)

I'm going to try! Did the LA to FH drive for Christmas, so I'll try to figure out flights when the days are nailed down, I can only do that drive once every few years

They don't have much sound of their own. I don't know how else to describe it. They are colorless.

Perhaps that was my takeaway. Probably good for utilizing effect-pedals. I know that's why metal guitarists like active EMG pu's - they are very neutral clean.

I get more mileage because I have too many Thunderbirds and rotate them. Although the ‘15 gets a new set yearly when it gets a Spa Day with fretboard cleaning, complete polish, etc. Usually around Spring Daylight Savings Time. Have I mentioned lately how much I love the ‘15?

I had Sunbeams put on my just received DiCola equipped Tbird. Great lows/mids, the growl is pretty subtle, this bird might need, gasp, steels, I never thought I'd say that, I've never liked them. What do you use on yours? George?

A surf green Thunderbird would be awesome! I just hope it’s a through neck and decent pickups
If they do it, I assume it’ll be the 60’s with Epi 760 Probuckers. Not bad. But if I buy one, I’ll swap in the Gibson Reissues.
I was making an Epi TRC logo for Jeff, so I figured why not make an oversized chrome logo for my VP? Kinda works with the huge headstock IMO.

You’re the master! I’ll try to get my s**t together and send you my projects. Your work on the Silverburst pg and tr cover is awesome Irv.

SIT Power Steels. Nothing else. And the bass sounds incredible through the TT 800, the Carbine M6, and the SVT VR. Four distinctly different flavors, but with the Tbird growl. Factor in the versatility of the tapped pickups and the bass can do pretty much anything.

I managed to get the bottom cover off one of my Orville pickups.
They are potted in epoxy, but the can wasn’t filled and the cover wasn’t soldered to the base plate.
Looks like alnico magnets.
DCR is about 7.8k on both.
It will be interesting to A/B them with the Gibson reissues.

You da man, Irv! This will be interesting.

This is pretty much the only Stones era I listen too. Great stuff.

For me - from Paint It Black through the early '70s.

I like the snappy drum pick-up into each verse (1:37-3:55 - unlike original) ... but I personally find Jaggers performance a bit embarrassing. It seems as if he's attempting to "do a Bowie" - without DB's theatrical/artistic panache. Also the "woman as props" aspect (5:04)... really distasteful IMO. Plus, the outro was so overblown and unnecessary - yikes... their excuse would be "it's live - let's pull out all he stops"... which kills a lot of live presentations. :rollno:

I'm VP on the board of directors and you have my full backing.
(OK, it's not actually Epi/Gibson's Board, but as a non-member of the Board of Directors, my vote is yes.)

Those things are such great ideas. I don't understand why they in some way haven't been tried. Talk about making Epi a more high-end looking bass. As we've lamented before, I can't fathom why Gibson hasn't had some inlays at least from time to time. Could be if Epi gets too much attention it could very well cut into the Gibson market.
It feels like Epiphone is the bass division anyway.
They dither around too much with basses through the Gibson brand. They have some perennials but others come and go with the wind
