Thunderbirds and their cousins = Welcome here!
The club roster is a page or two back, shall I add you good sir?
There's not a lot of Gibson love here on TB - Mostly a lot of crap talking pousers that haven't owned/played a Gibson bass, I read a bit of that thread and you can easily tell who's full of $6%7. Anyway, please feel welcome here![]()
I have an Orville, mine has been re-finned and along with that it got a pretty nice two point bridge. So it now resembles a '63 TBIV, however it differs from some Thunderbirds in that it's a set neck as opposed to neck thru. I can't speak about the original QC since mine is a refin, but I'd expect typical very good Japanese quality, the pickups are hot and have a very nice tone to them - I'm always very glad I got the chance to buy mine - it came from a buddy on another forum.

Here's the backside of a '76 - older pic. The clovers are huge and so are the backplates - if they fit at all you'll be filling and redrilling holes for the posts.

Added Purple silliness.

Thanks for that.Nice collection of Gibsons... That all-black RD Standard sure is sweet looking!![]()
I'm going to guess it's the camera angle playing tricks but are the shafts perpendicular to the hs edge? They look ever so slightly pointed south.
Thanks for that.
The Standard is an interesting beast for sure- there are some sound clips in the first link below.
Apparently the Standards were only sold in relatively small numbers. Fly Guitars says only about 900. I have heard elsewhere that maybe only about 100 of the black ones were sold.
Whatever the number, there weren't many and I have only seen a couple for sale over the years. I was pretty lucky to get hold of it. As you can hear and already know, the criticism elsewhere on the forum of Gibson humbuckers is founded in ignorance.
BTW. I have a NOS loaded guard for this bass in case I ever need a replacement pickup- which I believe they were only used on this model.
