Thunderbird Club

The black Greco is still on CL here, and now a burst Orville has turned up. If the maps are correct, both are about a mile from me but in different directions. I am full up, or the Greco would be pretty compelling.
I saw the Orville. Needs a bit of woodwork as there is some damage around the jack. It would be a good candidate for a refinish.
If I didn't already own one, I'd be on it.

My El Degas is very different from a Thunderbird. The neck is a baseball bat, and the bass is a bit heavy. It wants to be horizontal and only horizontal. The pickups sound different, as you would expect from single coils placed at the neck heel and more or less sweet spot. It has a more yellow sound than a Thunderbird.

The 1998 and 2006 Rickenbackers I had were similar except for much thinner necks. And the awkward double truss rod. Given a choice, I will take the El Degas overall. There are some nicer things about a real Ric to be sure. Those things don't overcome what a pita the double trust rod is to deal with.
If you ever want to thin that neck, we could measure the neck on mine as a reference.

For those of you that love EBCF and have short scale basses:

I put the 110 set on a SS (30”) I have tuned to D standard and it sounds awesome. The tension at that tuning is a little light, but still doable. I think the 105 set will be perfect for E standard and even Eb tuning.

Judging by the second pic you were quite young when you got the Chevette…

Vauxhall (GM in UK) also called their T car a Chevette.

Got everything. I like it all except the snow. You can keep that.

Looks similar to an '80s Ford Fiesta I had for a couple years as a cheap replacement vehicle. Front wheel drive, speedo only went to 80mph. It was actually fun to dive and do reverse donuts in the winter.

Bare bones basic - same colour, no whitewalls/hubcaps. I had a sunroof installed.

mom had a Chevette and it was an off road/rally machine when she wasn’t looking….

I found a local mechanic to handle the drivetrain, and he thinks it need catalytic converters and gave me tips on the other stuffs like cosmetics that I’ll be handling.

he did get a laugh over the fender flares and wheels. Apparently the wheels are from a later generation car that is two inches wider. He had never seen anything like it and he has seen everything.

I have an appointment in 6-8 weeks…. One man shop, clean as hell and professional. 53 corvette on one rack and a 60’s chebbie pickup on the other with a 6 speed transmission (corvette)installed

he said he wouldn’t give 15k for the 53 he had on the rack…. And it looked really nice to me…

Rambler is home, needs a little bit before I drive it to work, accelerator assembly needs attention as it broke on the way home…

Weird coincidence.

So last Monday the Kia blows up. Contacted a guy and he is going to meet me the next day to pick it up.

That evening I’m looking for cars and the rambler wagon catches my eye. I go to punch in the number to text about it and it’s the same number…

when he comes to pick up the Kia we start talking about the VW 181 I have and the Rambler I want. Tuesday I check out the Rambler
He comes by Thursday to check out the 181, and Saturday we make the exchange….

The seats have been reupholstered, and the factory carpet and interior is serviceable.

need new rubber all around and a windshield and paint.

I was going to take it around and get paint job estimates but the accelerator rod has come off the gas pedal. The breather needs to be cleaned and new o-rings on the filler tube. I’ll try and do that today. I already secured a source for the windshield rubber and windshield. Ohh and side mirrors. Maybe just a driver side.
