Okay, a few years ago, a luthier who I befriended gifted me some pieces of scrap wood, including a small beam of Padauk.
I wasted little time crafting instruments from his generous offer.
The "Boardcaster", named that way because I actually used my old pedal board as a top for this body. The neck is one that that buddy gave me, the fingerboard comes from my first Les Paul, an Epiphone which was damaged beyond repair. As the second photo of this guitar will show, I later modded it with a Jazzmaster Whammy bar and have been using it a lot live.
Made this monster with the neck of a busted up Morgan branded acoustic, the body is a poor man's "Hippie sandwich" of a plywood back, pine as a core and padauk top with a centre of oak.
And then there was THIS.
Which I actually started making around the same time that I started making the "Boardcaster" I took inspiration from those early eighties custom builders like Valleyarts, Charvel and Schecter. But it took way longer than anticipated to finish her. The body is mahogany with a Padauk top, the neck is from those scrap pieces that buddy gave me, with a Padauk fingerboard. Today was the first time since starting her build 4 years ago, that I actually strung her up. She feels tough, nice heft to her and a BIG, but comfy neck profile.
Together with the Boardcaster, you might not be able to tell straight away, but both guitars have a lot in common, the most obvious is the fact that they're both starts style guitars with Tele style necks. But they also have Gibson 24.5 scale lengths.
