Thunderbird Club

Thought I’d share some “R&D”

When I installed the Gibson Reissue pickups in my Orville, I found the new pickups were thinner (top to bottom).

I couldn’t really get the new pickups up high enough without running out of thread on the screws. I suppose I could get longer screws, but having recently solved a similar problem when I put a Tbird cover on my Casady’s pickup, I decided to make a pickup spacer with integrated 4-40 nuts. That allows using 4-40 stainless machine screws instead of wood screws.

I had drawn the Casady bracket in a web based Autodesk program called TinkerCad:

Then the file gets imported into Slicer software to run the 3D printer. I figured out how to pause the print, so I could embed the nuts. Then the printer can continue adding plastic layers:

The finished version looked like this:

For the Tbird, I wanted a flatter spacer, and didn’t need that height. I left room for the pickup wire to exit the cavity. I also put a channel underneath so the neck pu wire could travel under the spacer:

Here it is installed. The PLA plastic is pretty weak and I’ve had to epoxy the pieces over the nuts.

This worked and I’m able to get that bridge pickup up high, where it needs to be to keep up with the neck pickup.

……And we’re also printing articulated creatures like this dragon:

Ok vanity plates for the corvette…

The plates I will get are limited to 6 characters…. Can’t use a dash or a space… lame… I could get a plate that allows 8 characters if needed but it’s not as cool.

It’s a red 1992 C4 LT-1 Corvette…..

Having the nuts embedded sounds kinda scary.;)

You’re having too much fun!

Interesting Brit overview on '70s Glam but they showed a teaser clip of Bowie/Ronson in the beginning and then didn't cover them. (!) Never heard of many of the bands/artists ... big in the UK but not so much the US I guess unless a hard-core Glam follower. Love the Roxy clip.

So are you running straight pipes or glass packs or turbo mufflers or something stock after the headers?
Some high revving sixes sound sweet with a low restriction exhaust. Can’t say I’ve heard a straight six TR fitted out that way, might sound very cool and give a bit of bump in the HP as well.

Have to admit I Didn’t watch the whole 49 minutes but I still enjoy some Roxy Music occasionally too. Bryan Ferry had a great voice. Their Bass player(s) was good. Phil Manzanera was (is) a great guitarist too. He played a nice Firebird 3 pickup, whammy bar!

All of them played a few different instruments over time - but that red FB was somewhat of a signature guitar for him.

And R.I.P. Chris Cross of Ultravox. A few days ago I listened "Rage In Eden" unavare that he had already passed.

I'm listening to it for the 1st time now - in the '80s I was listening to mostly classical & jazz so there's a certain amount of catch-up now - but my ears are open. I think my favorite '80s bands were Talk Talk, The Pretenders, The Specials, Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush.

Hi! Sorry for not being active here for a while. Been playing and here's a pic to prove it (I'm wearing the shades because I'm not playing a T-Bird...)
